Quick Hits:
*With nine entries cruising under the 17-minute mark for the 5K, and three more dancing below 16:10, the Varsity Boys race is boiling with competition. Graham Weiss of Hernando, basking in an undefeated glow, seeks his third straight win. Fresh off a staggering 60-second win at the NMPHC Cross Country Classic, Weiss is the man to watch. But challenges are aplenty. Starkville's Giles Jones, the Tupelo Spartans duo of Sam Johnson and Jeb Hamilton, and the tenacious Parker Shannon from Saltillo promise a race to remember. Johnson and Hamilton's recent 1-2 finish at the NMPHC Cross Country Classic, Small School division, only fans the flames of anticipation. Then there's Brodie Moore from West Union, who was hot on their heels in 16:50 in that same race. Lastly, Jones has a 16:08 5K PR to his name, and will be making his 2023 Cross Country season debut.
*The Saltillo boys, having tasted victory at the NMPHC, are on the hunt for another.
*The Varsity Girls race is all about Hernando's Kaitlyn Burge. Her 2023 track record speaks volumes: undefeated, with two course records under her belt. Brookelyn Morgan's course record of 19:50 might just be under threat tonight. Riley Jackson, seeded second and Burge's partner in crime, is another racer worth noting after their 1-2 finish at the NMPHC Cross Country Classic.
*Don't discount young gun Ally Murphy from Myrtle - an eighth-grader that has already acquired several class titles at the varsity level, as well as middle school title on the grass. Her recent victory at the NMPHC Cross Country Classic in the Small School Varsity Girls division is a testament to her talent, and Murphy is never one to back down from a challenge.
