Weekend Recap: Course Records drop like Flies

Northwest Rankin

Northwest Rankin was considerably a more difficult course with some of the top runners in the state running much slower at this site of competition.

For the boys', current MS All-State #2, Sam Arnold out-kicked the current MS All-State #1, Grayson Childress for a winning time of 17:24. Childress finished not too far behind with a time of 17:39. The two Brookhaven runners have broken 16-minutes earlier in the season, which speaks about the difficulty of this course - They both were under the course record.

Rounding out the top 3 from this race was William Fugate of Madison St. Joseph, who finished with a time of 17:59. Fugate again raced well and placed himself in front of other top runners in the state like Jake Thompson and Trey Knott. Fugate was also under the old course record.

Brookhaven took home the team title on the boys' side with little dispute. Ole Brook also finished with a strong 59 second 1-5 split and a team average of 17:58, putting 4 in the top 5 and their scoring 5 inside the top 9. Following the Panthers were Madison Central and Germantown High with team scores of 71 and 79 points.

Note from the State Editor: Brookhaven continues to assert their dominance across the state and will have their biggest test in Saltillo next weekend.

The girls' division was won by Emily Ireland of St. Andrew's who won with a time of 20:55. She had a definitive lead on the rest of the field with Abi Alden Benton of Madison Ridgeland coming in with a second-place finish at 22:39. Finishing in third, at the same time as Benton, is Angela Bethea of Madison St. Joseph

Note from the State Editor: As we saw from Saturday, Ireland is obviously in much better shape than her performance in Memphis, and will be exciting to see what else she has up her sleeve for later in the season. Also, it should be noted that Ireland was less than 20 seconds off of Brooklyn Biancamano's course record...

Brookhaven took home gold on the girls' side with five runners representing in the top 22. Following for a close second-place is Brandon High School with 65 points and Madison Central in third with 74 points.
