Brandon High School duo sweeps 100m and 200m at Pearl T&F Opener

Brandon High School's dynamic duo of Addison McLaurin and Kennedy Stringfellow had a huge day at the Pearl Track and Field Opener, sweeping the 100m and 200m dashes.

McLaurin set state-leading marks in both events, winning with times of 12.33 and 25.34, and hitting the MileSplit Mississippi 1st-Team standard in both. Meanwhile, Stringfellow, primarily known as a jumper, decided to test his talents in the sprints and came away with two gold medals in the 100m and 200m, winning in impressive times of 11.03 and 22.28, respectively.

Stringfellow's victories in the 100m and 200m were especially notable, as he hit the MileSplit Mississippi 1st-Team standard in three events this season, having already won the long jump with a mark of 22-7.5 at an earlier meet. This was an impressive start for the talented Brandon athlete, who looks to be a threat in multiple events this season.

After Cam Covey and Laurel Fulcher graduated MRA to run at Southern Miss and Ole Miss, respectively, many wondered who would fill their shoes.

The solution lies in sophomore Jake McMillan who took 1st and 2nd in the 110mH and 300mH, respectively, and freshman Lily Vick who added wins in both the 100mH and 300mH.

Both athletes were champions in the junior high ranks last year and look to be varsity champions this year. They are both currently ranked inside the top five in the state, ranking among those contending to be the best, and have a bright future ahead of them.

Biloxi's Cheyanne Alston wins four events at Sabbatini Relays

Her 200m time of 26.22 was also a lifetime best.

Judging by just her first meet, we think it is safe to say that Cheyanne Alston is set for success this season.

Clinton Girls open up strong, look to defend MHSAA 6A title

The girls of Clinton High are quickly solidifying themselves as Mississippi's most dominant squad across the board.

Currently, the Mississippi High School Girls event leaders in eight of the 16 events that the state offers all hail from Clinton. Headlined by Tacherria Lawson, Corshunna Hughes, Kaitlyn Jones, and Meagan Womack, the 2023 Clinton Season Opener was won with ease by the host team.

*Tupelo's Zech Pratt Jr. ran a state-leading mark in the High School Boys 400m dash of 51.37, good enough to win the South Panola Opener, and remains the lone Mississippian to have hit the MileSplit Mississippi 1st-Team standard in the event this season.

Another impressive statistic that caught our attention, Pratt Jr's performance was an outdoor lifetime best by nearly two seconds.

*Addison Yelverton of Biloxi put down two MileSplit Mississippi 1st-Team standards at the Sabbatini Relays. In the High School Girls' 400m dash, Yelverton won in a time of 1:00.95 seconds, nearly four seconds faster than her season-opening 400m this time last season. She doubled back in the 200m dash to run 26.30 seconds, placing second to her teammate, Cheyanne Alston, whose performance was mentioned above.

Lastly, Yelverton is currently No. 2 in the state in the 400m dash, just 0.15 seconds behind Gulfport's Lania McDonald, who won the Pearl Track and Field Opener 400m in 1:00.80 seconds.

McDonald and Yelverton are the only two Mississippi preps that have gone under 61 seconds in the High School Girls' 400m dash at this point in the season.
