Monday Morning Recap: Cartwright snags win, Multiple upsets

Cathedral Twilight XC Meet - Individual Recap

Casey Haddox-Harvey, Columbia Academy

NATCHEZ, Miss. --- Casey Haddox-Harvey took home the win on the boy's side, and, officially, Layla Warren of Simpson Academy had another successful outing and won the varsity girl's race.

RESULTS: 2022 Cathedral Twilight XC Meet

However, sources have confirmed that Lilly Overby, also of Simpson, took home the gold, racing unattached.

The time is unknown, but nonetheless, it was a solid meet from both Warren and Overby and further proves that these girls are making a name for themselves as potentially the best female duo in Mississippi.

Moving on to the varsity boys' results, 4:49 miler Haddox-Harvey of Columbia Academy got a big win against some stellar competition, running 11:01 to take down some stellar competition amidst the MAIS.

It seemed to be a five-man race between Haddox-Harvey, Cathedral's Barrett Burget and Owen Bertelsen, Park Place's Christopher Atkinson, and Simpson's Denver Carter.

Haddox-Harvey edged out Burget by four second, with Atkinson, who is coming off of a 10:33 2-mile at the 2022 Early Bird 2-miler, took third in 11:11.

RESULTS: 2022 Early Bird 2-miler

What we called versus what actually happened:

We figured that Warren and Overby were going to go 1-2, but we have to say that we thought Warren would take the win.

As mentioned above, we don't know the official time for Overby, but those are two fantastic results for both Simpson runners, and Overby could potentially make a statement to get herself on the All-MileSplit Mississippi XC Team.

We knew this was going to be a tight race between four out of the top five boys, with Bertelson being the one that we did not expect would get fourth.

We never actually called our shot, but we have to say that Haddox-Harvey taking the win was a surprise to us. He was coming off of a successful outing at the 2022 Early Bird 2-miler, but was still 15 seconds behind Atkinson. We knew Haddox-Harvey would race well like he usually does, but we figured either Atkinson or Burget would take the win.

But, Haddox-Harvey proved us wrong, and we commend him on a fantastic race.

Cathedral XC Twilight Meet - Team Recap

The boys of Cathedral Unit School defended their home course... But just barely.

Cathedral won with a score of 59 points. The tally of second place - 60 points. The tally of third place - 60 points.

That's right - In an epic team race where the slightest shift of the results could have changed the end result, Cathedral beat out Silliman Institute and Columbia Academy by the skin of their teeth.

All in all, we're definitely looking forward to the 2022 MAIS 5A Cross Country Championships.

Cathedral Unit School

There were no surprises in the girl's team race, as Simpson got their second win in a row this season in dominating fashion, beating Columbia by 21 points - And, this was without Lilly Overby factored into the results.

In summary, the girls of Simpson remain on top of MAIS 5A for another week.
