Mississippi Indoor Track and Field: 2022 MLK Preview

HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS

Lenasia Drummond

School: Hattiesburg High School

Event(s): 60mH, LJ, TJ

Last Meet: 60mH - 8.92 PR | LJ - 17-4.5 PR | TJ 38-0.25 PR

Starting us off in the MLK Preview is none other than Lenasia Drummond of Hattiesburg, one of the most versatile track and field athletes in Mississippi. As you can see above, Drummond had a very successful season indoor opener last week at the 2022 Icebreaker Invitational, hitting PR's in 3 different disciplines, as well as hitting Mississippi-leading marks in the process. Drummond is entered in the same events this weekend, and will possibly go for some state records - She was only 0.05 seconds off of the state record in the 60-meter hurdles.

Gracyn Yelverton

School: Biloxi High School

Event: 400m

Last Meet: 60m - 8.39 | 400m - 59.15

The 2021 MHSAA 6A State Champion is back for more after making her indoor career debut last weekend at the 2022 Icebreaker Invitational. We are of course talking about Biloxi's Gracyn Yelverton, who took down heat 3 in the 400m last weekend in a very impressive 59.15. This week, however, it is looking like Yelverton will make the fast heat and be up against some better competition to potentially push her to another PR. While I don't like throwing times up in the air, I did go on record in the IceBreaker Review Podcast that I think Yelverton would have run a 58.5 if she would have been in the fast heat. If she does what she did last weekend and simply races the field, who knows... maybe Yelverton can surprise even herself.

Kya Warnsley

School: Hattiesburg High School

Event: PV

Last Meet: N/A - Indoor Season Debut

Making her 2022 indoor season debut is the 2021 MHSAA 5A State Champion in the Pole Vault, Kya Warnsley of Hattiesburg! Warnsley is back in her specialty event, the pole vault tomorrow at MLK. As a matter of fact, the last time that she competed was her outdoor state title in the pole vault back in May of 2021. If track athletes such as Lenasia Drummond or Javarius Molden have told us anything, it is that Hattiesburg has been putting in the work in the offseason.

Kymiah Hilton

School: Hattiesburg High School

Event: TJ

Last Meet: TJ - 23-11.5

Combing back for her 2nd meet of the 2022 indoor circuit in her specialty event is 2021 MHSAA 5A State Medalist, Kymiah Hilton of Hattiesburg! Hilton is entered as the #6 seed in the triple jump and is a mere 3.5 inches away from coming away with a Top-4 finish. Hilton will have some solid competition, including teammate Lenasia Drummond, and the duo could potentially work together and bring each other to more PR's.

Shana Sellers

School: Pearl High School

Event(s): 1600m, 3200m

Last Meet: N/A - Indoor Season Debut

Last but not least, leading the high school girls in the distance events is the 2021 MHSAA 6A State Medalist in the 3200m, Shana Sellers of Pearl! Sellers is entered in the same two events that she made it to state in back in May, which are the 1600m and 3200m. The last time Sellers stepped on the track was the Mississippi meet of Champions with her 11:59 3200m performance and she hasn't been on the indoor oval since 2 years ago. Sellers had a solid 2nd half of her cross country season after having a late start due to injury, and with this being her senior season, I would think Sellers is going to go out with a bang!
