Mississippi high school track and field athletes recorded several personal bests during competition the week of April 6.
Yelana Fulgham (Choctaw County) cleared 11-0 in the pole vault at the MHSAA Region 4-3A meet on April 9, improving from her previous best of 9-6. The junior won the event and set a school record while moving to #7 in the state rankings and #1 among Mississippi juniors.
DeWuan Myers (North Forrest) threw 139-8 in the discus at MHSAA Region 8-2A on April 10, breaking his previous mark of 109-0. The sophomore won the event and established a school record, ranking #52 statewide and #6 among sophomores. Myers also set a personal best in the shot put, improving from 36-5.5 to 41-7.
Trenton Hicks (Desoto Central) ran 15.15 in the 110m hurdles at the Woody Barnett Track & Field Invitational on April 10, lowering his previous time of 16.03. The senior placed fifth and ranks #35 in Mississippi and #9 among seniors. Hicks also improved his 300m hurdles time from 41.81 to 41.79 at the same meet.
Catherine Davis (Providence Classical Academy) ran 5:48.37 in the 1600 meters at the LA Mile Festival on April 11, improving from 6:09.42. The sophomore finished 17th and ranks #95 statewide and #14 among sophomores.
Ka'liyah Bullock (Velma Jackson) ran 26.53 in the 200 meters at MHSAA Region 4-2A on April 9, improving from her March time of 27.47. The sophomore won the event and ranks #106 statewide and #17 among sophomores. Bullock also lowered her 400-meter time from 1:05.67 to 1:04.10.
Chase Wasson (Tri County Academy) threw 145-6 in the discus at the Dist 4 1A, Dist 5 2A, Dist 2-3A JR High Championship & VAR Invitational on April 8, improving from 130-10. The sophomore won the event and ranks #31 in Mississippi and #5 among sophomores.
Ellic Laneaux (Pass Christian) cleared 6-4 in the high jump at MHSAA Region 8 4A on April 10, improving from his April mark of 6-0. The senior won the event and ranks #17 statewide and #5 among seniors.
