Talk of the Town: XC is Back

September 2-8 Recap

THE OPENER - High School / Middle School 2024

Leading from start to finish, Brennan Robin from Parkway High School in Louisiana was miles away from the competition. Brennan took the win in 15:40 for a sizable personal best. The runner-up finisher was none other than Jaquavion Bryant from Pearl High School. He finished with a time of 16:31, followed closely by Oak Grove's Grayson Taylor in 16:32. Parkway High School won the overall team title with a total score of 33 and an average 16:32. Behind them was Pearl High School with 56 points and a 16:57 team average.

On the girls side, Lilly Overby dominated the race and never looked back. She confidently ran a time of 18:41 and was over 40 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Addison Rainey. This marks her second win on Mississippi soil this year and keeps her undefeated in Mississippi for the season. Overby has displayed relentless performances early on in the season, and so far only Alex Lee of Madison Central and Addison Rainey of Ocean Springs have responded to her times. If she continues to perform at her current condition, she may remain undefeated for the entire season.

2024 Tupelo Invitational

At the 2024 Tupelo Invitational, the Tupelo squad threw down the fastest times we've seen so far this season. With a blazing time of 15:09, Andrew Brown won the race in record-breaking style. His time of 15:09 makes him one of the fastest sophomores in the country and the 2nd fastest Mississippi High Schooler to ever touch a cross-country course. Behind him was his brother Taylor Brown with a finishing time of 15:32. These times rank the two brothers 1st and 2nd in the state of Mississippi. As a team, the Tupelo boys won the day with 45 points and a 16:38 average. According to Milesplit XC Team Scores, this Tupelo team is only 1 point behind the reigning MHSAA 7A champions, Pearl High School. Not only are they only 1 point behind, but they boast an almost 30-second faster average than the Pearl team.

For the girl's teams, Brookelyn Morgan of Tupelo High School won the day with a time of 19:27. Brookelyn won the race with a big lead and also led her team to the win. The Tupelo Girls team acquired 35 points and further extended their lead on the Milesplit XC Team Scores.

French Camp Invitational

At the French Camp Invitational, Clinton High School put on a clinic and swept the top four positions in the boys 5000-meter race. Led by Hyrum Boone's 17:48, they amassed only 17 points and split an 18:33 average. They were almost 60 points ahead of second-place finishers French Camp Academy. Clinton didn't stop with the varsity boys race, as they went on to win the varsity girls race and both JV races. They swept every single race at the French Camp Invitational and did so without much fight from any other team. The only smudge on their perfect day was from the varsity girls winner, Samantha Edwards from Saint Aloysius HS. She beat out Clinton's Kaedyn Wilson to snatch victory with a time of 19:50. This personal best for Samantha allowed her to clutch the win and earned her team the second-place finish, just eight points ahead of French Camp Academy.
