In the return of Milesplit Mississippi Future Stars, we will be highlighting Pearl High School's Wyatt Chapa!

Wyatt Chapa is an eighth-grade distance runner who had a standout season in the middle school cross-country scene. With personal records of 10:27 in the 3k and 11:31 in the 2.1 mile, he was one of the fastest runners in the state in each event.

During the 2023 cross-country season, Chapa won five of the seven races he participated in. At the pinnacle of his season, he won the large division race at the 2023 MHSAA Middle School Cross Country Classic, one of the biggest middle school races of the year. His 3k PR ranks him thirrd in the state for middle school athletes and his impressive record of wins puts him as one of the best middle school runners this year for Mississippi.

With track season right around the corner, Chapa will be an athlete to look out for. He already holds a personal best of 2:28 in the 800, but he is on track to smash that record in 2024. After expanding his distance-racing experience this year, we could also potentially see him move up to the 1600 and 3200 races. Based on his cross-country fitness, Chapa could challenge for the top spot in any of these races during this upcoming track season.

Make sure to keep tabs on this young athlete as he travels into the 2024 season, and stay tuned for more MileSplit Mississippi Future Stars.
