It was just another workout for Walnut High School senior Gabe McElwain, the new MHSAA 2A Cross Country State Meet record holder.

After the MHSAA 2A Cross Country Championships got pushed back to Wednesday, Nov. 9, due to bad weather, McElwain endured the heat to an easy 16:21.8 5K, claiming his fourth MHSAA 2A individual title of his career.

After accidentally coming through the first mile in 4:56, McElwain decided to cool off and save his legs for the 2022 Mississippi All-State XC Championships, where he would go after the Choctaw Trails course record of 15:15 held by East Central's Christian Balcer

East Union High School took the time title in a 10-point victory over East Webster High School, 72-82. The Urchins had three runners in All-MHSAA 2A finishing positions and were the only team to have a scoring five average of under 20 minutes in the 5K.
