Mid-Week Recap: Huge Performances and the Postseason Begins

SPRINTS RECAP

Jordan Anthony and Jeremiah Dillon take down Mobile

Once Jordan Anthony and Jeremiah Dillon rolled up to the 2022 Mobile Challenge of Champions, the result was all but set in stone.

Scheduled for both the 100m and 200m, the Miss. #1 and #2 ranked sprinters were set to race against some of the greatest competition they could have in the south, and as expected, they handled it flawlessly. Jordan Anthony left the competition in the dust, running 10.25 and 20.60 to win both events while teammate Jeremiah Dillon clipped 2nd in both by running 10.52 and 21.31 to beat out 3rd place by 0.01 and .21 respectively.

If that wasn't already impressive enough, Anthony and Dillon ran those 100m times into a 0.9 mph headwind.

Tylertown's iconic sprint duo, which in my opinion is the best short sprints duo in the nation, swept the top spots once again and proved again that they could possibly be the greatest duo the state of Mississippi has ever seen. Expect the two seniors to keep running fast times and sweeping spots in the upcoming championship races.

Event Recap: High School Girls 400m

The High School Girls 400m continued to get stronger heading into the postseason, with Madison Ridgeland's Kennedi Sanders and Biloxi's Gracyn Yelverton leading the way.

Sanders ran a SB of 55.7 to win the 2022 Woody Barnette Track and Field Invitational by nearly 5 seconds, making it look like one of the easiest sub-56 400s I have ever seen.

Yelverton ran a PR of 57.5 to win the 2022 Biloxi Indians Invitational, staying undefeated in both the 200m and 400m through the regular season. Yelverton was running PR after PR in the 100m and 200m, and was due for a PR in her specialty event.

Both Yelverton and Sanders looked prime and ready to rock the postseason and potentially defend their 400m state titles in their respective class.

New Miss. #1: JaBrysten Abram

JaBrysten Abram took the Mississippi High School Boys 300m Hurdles to the next level this past weekend after he blazed a time of 38.69 at the 2022 Panola, Lafayette, Tate County Challenge.

This new PR by almost a second and a half was huge for the Senatobia junior, as well as the state of Mississippi as a whole, as he seized the Miss. #1 spot as well as a national mark of #56 in the event.

He ran that as part of a quadruple consisting of the 100m, 200m, 110mH, and 300mH, and now owns the top marks in MHSAA 4A in the 200m and 300mH. Abram is also undefeated in both the 110mH and 300mH.

As the championship season begins, Abram could potentially score over 30 points for the Warriors as they try to snag a MHSAA 4A Track title to go with their 2021 MHSAA 4A Cross Country Team Title.

Future Star: Alexis Mosley

One future star who led the weekend as just an 8th grader was Shannon High School's Alexis Mosley running an impressive 12.18 at the 2022 Starkville Invitational.

With that performance, Mosley now leads the entire MHSAA in the High School Girls 100m dash and sits second in the state only behind 400m state record holder Kennedi Sanders. Mosley is also currently the 5th fastest 8th grader in the 100m dash in the nation.

The postseason is coming up, and Mosley could be looking to potentially snag the first of many MHSAA 4A medals this outdoor season.

Event Recap: High School Girls 300mH

Kaitlyn Jones had a weekend that most athletes dream of having in the 300m Hurdles.

At the 2022 Mobile Challenge of Champions Open Division, the freshman from Clinton HS decimated a very talented field. That field included her teammate Jenesis Williams and Kerri Pittman of Gulfport High, who both ran state championship-caliber times in the High School Girls 300mH. Jones, Williams, and Pittman are now all in the top six in the state of Mississippi.

However, the Cinderella story was not over for Jones, as her win in the open section at the 2022 Mobile Challenge of Champions allowed her entry into the Invite section of the 300mH the very next day. Even with this short notice opportunity, Jones performed above all expectations, again setting a massive PR of 45.52 to top some more big names including Lenasia Drummond who ran her best ever 300mH in 45.76.

Jones is now the Miss. #2 ranked long hurdler behind Tupelo's Bailey Siddell who also had a massive race at the 2022 King of the West meet to take the Miss. #1 in 45.36.

Both Siddell and Jones are freshmen in MHSAA 6A, so it will be very exciting to see where this rivalry brings both of them.
