High School Girls Events to Watch
High School Girls 100m dash
In the High School Girls 100m field, we have a plethora of talent that could take the victory.
The top entry is Ridgeland High School junior Valencia Watson. Undefeated in the 2021 track season, she is the reigning 2021 MHSAA 5A State Champion and 2021 Meet of Champions winner.
She'll be looking out for the duo from Clinton high school in Tacherria Lawson and Zharia Bonner. Both Lawson and Bonner had impressive indoor campaigns, going 7.77 and 7.92 in the 60m, respectively.
Another athlete to keep an eye on is the MHSAA 6A state champion from Pearl High School, Taylor Stratton. She also had a stellar 2021 indoor season and will be looking to continue that momentum into 2022.
Prepare for a nail-biter in the High School Girls 100m dash at the Madison Central Track Classic race on Saturday and possibly the fastest time in the state of Mississippi this year.
High School Girls 800m run
Another race to watch out for is the High School Girls 800m.
Leading the way is the junior from Clinton High School Hannah Jackson. Jackson finally be testing out her 800m legs and will be looking to open her 2022 800m meter debut after having excellent performances in the 400m this indoor season going sub-60 seconds for the first time - A very impressive feat to accomplish indoors.
Not far behind Jackson is fellow junior from Madison Central, Ava Dear. She will be looking to challenge Jackson on her home track along with the Saint Andrews state qualifier in Isabella Flores.
Another name to look out for is Mississippi College commit Taylor Benoit. She is a 2-time MHSAA 1A state champion in the 400m and 800m, is undefeated from the 2021 track season, and has yet to ever lose an 800m race.
Look out for these names as they battle to line in the half-mile middle distance race at the 2022 Madison Central Jaguar Classic.
High School Girls Triple Jump
The field event to keep our eyes on as multiple MHSAA State Meet qualifiers will be aligning to form a loaded Triple Jump field at the 2022 Madison Central Track Classic.
Leading the way is Clinton's Latoria Spence with a #1 seed mark of 34-11 that she hit at her season opener and home track, the 2022 Clinton Season Opener. Spence has improved an enormous amount and looks to be ready to crack into the 35s on Saturday, and continue her momentum to make it to the 2022 MHSAA 6A State Championships.
Up next is Spence's teammate Eleanor Scott with a mark of 34-5.5 that she indoors at the 2022 Last Chance Invitational back in January. A 2021 MHSAA 6A State Qualifier in the Triple Jump, Scott is another key part of the strong Clinton High School Girls contingent. Look for the duo of Spence and Scott to sweep the top two spots at the 2022 Madison Central Track Classic.
Two more notable entries include Germantown's Lauren Palmer and Port Gibson's Niyah Washington, the MHSAA 6A and 5A bronze medalists, respectively.
Palmer got a headstart on her season with a 32-3.75 Triple Jump at the 2022 Last Chance Invitational, and will be looking to mix things up with the Clinton duo and make for a very competitive triple jump field at the 2022 Madison Central Track Classic.
High School Girls 3200m run
Topping off the exciting events to watch at the Madison Central Jaguar Classic is the 3200m.
Shana Sellers from Pearl High School is looking to open with a win in her first 3200m of the season. The Mississippi College commit had a strong track season last year where she podiumed at the MHSAA State Championships and got runner-up at the Mississippi Meet of Champions.
Also keep an eye out for the freshman from French Camp high school, Lucy Littlejohn. She had a statement of a cross country season winning the MHSAA 1A State Championship, placing second at the Watson High School meet in the blue division and at the Mississippi XC All-State Meet of Champions.
Except these girls along with the Clinton High School juniors Evelyn Mata-O'Dwyer and Sabine Cook, both 2021 MHSAA 6A 3200m State Qualifiers, to push each other to potentially the top 3200m time in the state.
