Weekend Recap: Course Records drop like Flies

Mooreville Invitational

The Mooreville Invitational was the site of the fastest times for boys' and girls' sides this past weekend.

On the boys' side, current MS All-State #4 Taylor Brown of Tupelo High School ran the fastest time of the weekend with a time of 16:26, followed by his teammate, current MS All-State #6, Jaheim Bridges. The two helped their team take home a second-place finish in the large school division with 49 points.

Note from the State Editor: Putting Brown and Bridges on that list was 100% a good call, as they showed the state they deserve to be there on Saturday. Who knows what they will do at Saltillo next weekend?

Tupelo finished 14 points behind the Saltillo High School, who managed to land 7 of their runners in the top 12. On top of that, they had an astounding 1-5 split of only 29 seconds and a team average of 17:46.

Saltillo's 1-5 split really caught my eye, and they have the ability to shock Brookhaven if they can manage to get that pack somewhere in between Brookhaven's 3 and 4.

Taking home the third-best overall time from the meet and opening up his season was MHSAA 4A Title favorite Cooper Parmer of Pontotoc High School with a time of 17:12. Pontotoc concluded the day with a third-place finish and a score of 61 points.

On the girls' side, Brookelyn Morgan of Tupelo dominated with a total time of 19:05 and a lead of over a minute. Following Morgan was Kate Gann of Itawamba AHS with a time of 20:22 and Hannah Sanders of Mooreville High with a time of 20:52.

Note from the State Editor: These two are talented runners, which tells how well Morgan ran this weekend. As a matter of fact, Morgan took the course record by over 20 seconds from the current 3200m state record holder Madison Jones. Not only that, but Gann's time was an All-time top 5 run ever run on that course. That should show you just how well Morgan ran this past weekend in Mooreville.

Just as they did on the boys' side, Saltillo took home the team title with a score of 38 points. This team is exceptionally talented when it comes to pack running, both on the boys' and girls' sides. With Saltillo taking the gold, the real fight was for the second-place team position. Pontotoc High School and Tupelo duked it out and eventually settled at 76 and 77 points, respectively.

It should also be noted that Saltillo's low stick Mia Card did not race.

In the small school division, Katie Meeks of Kossuth High School took home the gold with a performance of 20:38; followed by Emma Bourg of Wilson Christian with a time of 20:59.

Kossuth High ended up taking home the small school division title with a team score of 25 points over 2nd and 3rd place finishers, Regents of Oxford and Tupelo Christian Prep.

Once again, the seventh-grader Andrew Brown remains undefeated and claims another individual victory in the two-mile distance. He finished with a time of 11:54 and managed to win by well over a minute.
