Senior Hero's: Kaitlyn McRee, Wayne Academy

Mississippi Senior Heros 2020

Name: Kaitlyn McRee

School: Wayne Academy

Q: What does your training look like right now given the current situation?

A: My training right now consists of running at my house or either the walking trail in Quitman everyday. I also am doing workouts at home, and jumping my hurdle that I have in my yard everyday.

Q: What are you doing to stay busy other than run right now?

A: To keep myself busy I've been doing my online classes, swimming at my Nana's house with my brother and sister, and baking.

Q: What was your most memorable race/moment?

A: My most memorable race would have to be in 8th grade when I didn't qualify for state in the 300 hurdles. I know most people probably put something they've won for this question, but this was my most memorable race because it fueled me to work harder the rest of my years of high school in track. I remember after the race I was upset, but I'm grateful for that race now because it helped me to grow as a runner.

Q: What was the funniest thing that happened during your running career?

A: The funniest thing that happened to me during my career would have to be when I face planted running the 300 hurdles at a practice meet at Prentiss Christian. Although it wasn't funny at the time because I ended breaking my arm because it was concrete. A few days later however, my friend that went to school there told me they had found my shoelace in one of the hurdles, so then I thought it was funny.

Who would you consider your biggest competition over your four years?

A: My biggest competition is Alexis Tran and myself. She is actually my friend that I mentioned earlier that used to go to Prentiss Christian. We've always been competitive with each other since I started running track in 8th grade, but through competing with each other every week we became best friends. I am also my biggest competition, because every year I'm just trying to break my PR from the year before in every event I run.

Q: What was your greatest accomplishment?

A: My greatest accomplishment would have to be placing third at the MAIS state meet in the 300 hurdles last year. I broke my PR by over a second. I'm going for first this year, so hopefully I'll get a shot at it.

Q: If you could do it all over again what would you change about your running career in high school?

A: If I could do it all over again I would have started running track in the 7th grade instead of the 8th grade. I also would have started working on the 100 hurdles earlier, because it has helped me a lot with the 300 hurdles.

Q: What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?

A: My most difficult obstacle I had to overcome would be running hurdles again after I fell and broke my arm. It was hard for me because I had a voice in my head telling me every time I tried to jump them "you're going to fall". I got over this obstacle with the help of my teammates and my coaches. They always encouraged me and made me feel like I could do anything I put my mind to, and I am grateful for that.

Q: What will you miss the most?

A: It's hard for me to pin point what I will miss the most. I love this sport so much. The thing I will probably miss the most though is my talks with my mom, dad, nana, and sister before races. Also, the feeling after you finish a race when you feel like you can do anything.

Q: What advice would you give to younger athletes?

A: I know this sport requires running, but everyone should try it. It gives you a family, it gives you lots of new friends from other schools, and for me it helped me grow in my relationship with Jesus. It gives you goals and trust me it feels like you can fly when you finally reach them. Also, if you ever feel like not running at practice RUN, I promise even if you're the only one giving it your all it will pay off in the end.

Q: What kind of an impact has your coach had on you and your team?

A: I've had several different coaches throughout high school and I have loved each of them. They've all taught me different things and helped me grow in so many more ways than just in track. I love all of them. Their names are Morgan Turnipseed, Tera Britton, Champ Russell, and Coach Andy (I'm unsure of his last name).

Q: What are your college plans?

A: I'm unsure of where I'm going to college or what I'm going to major in right now. I'm thinking about possibly being a teacher though.

Q: Who would you like to say 'thank you' to?

A: I'd like to say thank you to my family, my teammates, my coaches, and my best friend, Parker Odom, they were always there for me throughout my best and my worst times in track. Special shoutout to Parker she's held my blocks and put up with my mini panic attacks before races. She's also been been my best friend the past eight years.

Q: Is there anything else you'd like to add?

A: Yes, I'm thankful for my mom, nana, and sister for always being there for me at every meet and being my biggest fans.

Q: Favorite Meal?

A: Fettuccini Alfredo

Q: If you could be any animal what would you choose? and why?

A: I would be a Dolphin, because they are my favorite animal and I would love to live in the ocean.

Q: Your favorite superhero?

A: The Flash
