Way Too Early XC Rankings: MAIS 5A Boys

RETURNER XC RANKINGS: MAIS 5A Boys

As the MAIS 5A Boys Cross Country Championships approach, there is an air of anticipation, with the graduation of top runners and the opportunity for a new star to emerge. In this early preview, we delve into the favorites and contenders for the individual title, as well as the teams vying for supremacy in the 5A classification.

Christopher Atkinson: The Top Contender

The heavy favorite for the individual title is Park Place Christian's Christopher Atkinson.

As the top returner to the meet and the fastest returner, Atkinson is poised to make his mark. With a remarkable 5K (XC) personal best of 17:19, achieved at the 2022 Simpson Academy Invitational, he holds a significant advantage over his competitors. Atkinson's consistent performance at the MAIS 5A level, earning four bronze medals, showcases his pedigree and determination.

Other Contenders

Casey Haddox-Harvey of Columbia Academy, Denver Carter of Simpson Academy, and Owen Bertelsen of Cathedral Unit School all bring their own strengths and aspirations to the competition.

With personal bests under 18 minutes, this trio poses a formidable challenge.

Haddox-Harvey, a 1600m specialist with a personal best of 4:49 and finished fourth at last year's MAIS 5A Cross Country Championships, shows great potential. Carter, a rising sophomore, has been on the cusp of stardom for some time now, while Bertelsen is coming off a successful track and field campaign that includes a bronze medal in the 800m at the 2023 MAIS 5A Track and Field Championships. If the rising junior from Cathedral is still in contention late in the race, he could rely on his middle distance speed to outback the competition for the win.

Team Race: Simpson Emerge as Pre-season Favorites

In the team race, the battle is intense among multiple schools, but Simpson Academy stands out as a surprise favorite.

The Simpson Academy boy's team, filled with talented youngsters, has steadily developed into a force at the MAIS 5A level. With a strong trio comprising Carter, Jayden Smith, and Parker Payne, they boast a formidable core. Additionally, their depth and consistency from their No. 4 and 5 runners give them an advantage.

However, Cathedral, Columbia, and East Rankin Academy also loom as threats, promising an exciting and closely contested team battle.

All in all, the MAIS 5A Boys Cross Country Championships promise to be an exhilarating event, showcasing the depth and talent of Mississippi's top runners.
