Gabe McElwain, Walnut High School

Hickory Flat Invitational

At the 2022 Hickory Flat Invitational, four varsity races went down.

Baldwyn High School's Hagan McCarley took the invitational title in the Varsity boys 1A-3A race with a time of 20:06.

From the team front, the Urchins of East Union High School took the title with 61 points over their county rivals West Union High School.

In the Varsity boys 4A-6A race, Walnut High's Gabe McElwain, the All-Milesplit Miss. XC No. 5, raced up and took the win in 18:44 in very sloppy conditions, and Corinth High School took the team title, scoring an impressive 22 points.

On the ladies' side, Morgan Green of Hickory Flat defended her home course and took the Varsity Girls 1A-3A individual title with a time of 22:48, beating 2021 MHSAA 2A Cross Country Champion Eliza McCarley in the process, who placed runner-up in 23:28.

The girls of Alcorn Central High School went home with the team title scoring 32 points, led by senior Noel Selph.

In the Varsity Girls 4A-6A race, Corinth High School's Elsie Wilbanks took the individual title in a time of 22:16, leading her squad to the team title with a tally of 30 points, taking down second place, Senatobia High School.

Forerunner XC Challenge

Samantha Kennedy, Oak Grove

At the 2022 Forerunner XC Challenge, there were two varsity races for each gender.

For the boys, the Green Division 5k champion was Heritage Christian's Dallas Stricker, who ran 17:26 over the Hattiesburg Forerunner Henry Richardson

However, the Forerunners did take home the team title with a total of 39 points.

In the Boys Yellow Division 5k, Oak Grove's Gavin Wheat took the individual win with teammate Bennett Ferguson six seconds behind, running 17:27 and 17:33 and leading their team to a perfect score of 15 on the day.

For the girls, the sixth grader Kaylie Frost of the Hattiesburg Forerunners took down her competition, winning the Girls Green Division 5k with a 22:21.

On the team side, Columbia Academy walked away with the victory edging out the forerunners by seven points scoring 27 points total.

In the Girls Yellow Division 5k, the eighth grader Samantha Kennedy of Oak Grove took the big-time win in 22:11 on her way to an additional team title for Oak Grove, 22 points for a 30-point win over George County High School.

JPS Challenge Series Meet 2


Benjamin Owens, Madison Central HS

At the 2022 JPS Cross Country Classic, Benjamin Owens of Madison Central got his first win of the season on his way to a big PR of 16:42 for 5k and took the Varsity Boys title.

Teammate Colin Brannon, currently coming off of sickness, placed runner-up in 17:17.

On top of that, Owens led his team to a dominant performance, as the Jaguars pulled off a clean sweep of the top seven spots.

For the girls, Alex Lee, the freshman of Madison Central, came from behind and ran 21:50, snagging her first-ever win on the grass.

The Lady Jags would also get the win, scoring 32 points on the day.

Okatibbee Classic


Evan Hallford, Neshoba Central HS

At the 2022 Okatibbee Classic, Evan Hallford, the freshman from Neshoba Central HS, won the Varsity Boys title in a new 5K PR of 17:58, his first time under 18 minutes for the 5k.

In team results, West Lauderdale High School came away with the victory, scoring 33 points and putting four runners inside of the top 10.

Moving on to the Varsity Girls, Emily Snodgrass of West Lauderdale ran 20:58 for a big win, taking down the next best finisher by two minutes. She led her squad to a team win for the day, scoring 27 points and narrowly defeating Neshoba Central by five points.
