State Meet Preview: High School Girls MAIS

FIELD

Evie Ewing of MRA

----

Thrower to Watch: Blair Walsh

An athlete who is showing up and is ready for the championship season is Amite School Center's Blair Walsh.

Having recently heaved a massive PR in the discus of 116-8 during her district meet, she is ranked #1 in the MAIS for the event and also ranked behind Sara Pace in the shot put.

Can the Amite School Center prep close the gap in the shot and hang on in the disc for her double crown? We'll have to see at the 2022 MSAIS Overall Track and Field Championships.

Matchup to Watch: Sara Carnathan v. Riley Hancock

A duo of athletes to keep an eye on is the high jump head-to-head matchup between Jackson Academy's Sara Carnathan and MRA's Riley Hancock.

These two are the highest-ranked high jumpers in MAIS 6A. Carnathan leads the way with a PR of 5-4 from the 2022 Jackson Academy Relays. She has only jumped on three occasions this season, so she will definitely be looking to raise the bar on Saturday.

However, Hancock has also consistently jumped over 5-0 this season, hitting a PR of 5-3 at the 2022 MRA Brick City Invitational, one inch behind Carnathan.

It's hard to predict who will take the gold between these two athletes, but look out for them to be the best jumpers the MAIS has to offer at the stat meet.

Athlete to Watch: Evie Ewing

An athlete who has had impressive performances throughout the 2022 outdoor season is MRA's, Evie Ewing.

Look out for her to be another ace up the Patriot's sleeve come Saturday. She has steadily proven her dominance in the long jump this season. Undefeated against any MAIS 6A competition, she leads her division by nearly one foot.

If she can repeat her PR jump of 17-9 from the 2022 MRA quad meet, it is safe to say she will stand atop the podium with the long jump crown at the 2022 MAIS State Championships.

Can Anslee Barnes snag TJ Class Record?

Topping off the field events, look out for Anslee Barnes of Desoto School in the triple jump.

She is undefeated this season in this event and is coming off a PR of 34-7.5 at the Lee Academy District Track Meet. This mark places her as the best triple jumper in MAIS 3A and the best in all of MAIS.

She'll have to look out for her teammate Sarah Lane Riddell who has had a solid season herself.

With all that said, Barnes will look to improve from her runner-up finish at last year's state championship and take the long jump crown for the first time.
