Field Athletes to Watch at the 2022 Golden Wave Invitational
Throwers to Watch: Cierra Crusoe and Keegan Wilfawn
Two throwers that will be highlighting the 2022 Golden Wave Invitational are MHSAA State Meet Qualifiers Cierra Crusoe of Columbus High and Oxford's Keegan Wilfawn.
Crusoe, the 2021 MHSAA 5A Discus State Champion and Shot Put Runner-Up, is the #1 seed in both throwing events. She is undefeated this 2022 outdoor season, and is looking to stay that way through the 2022 Golden Wave Invitational.
Crusoe has already hit a PR in the Shot Put this season of 38-7, and could be looking to crack through 100 feet for the first time this season as she will have the right competition to do so.
2021 MHSAA 1A State Medalists Jasmine Bonty and Grace McMullan also headline the field along with Crusoe.
Wilfawn opened up his season last weekend at the 2022 NMMC Relays with a Discus win, and his looking to get his second on Friday at the 2022 Golden Wave Invitational. He has thrown 150 feet in the Discus twice in his career, and is looking to snag a medal this year at the 2022 MHSA 6A State Championships.
Definitely keep an eye out for Crusoe and Wilfawn at the 2022 Golden Wave Invitational in the throws.
Interesting Matchup: Sterling Scott v. Micah O'Daniel
An interesting 'Golden Triangle' matchup that will be taking place is the High School Boys Triple Jump at the 2022 Golden Wave Invitational. Those two jumpers are none other than Starkville's Sterling Scott versus Caledonia's Micah O'Daniel.
Sterling Scott taking the Long Jump title at the 2022 Starkville High School Season Openr
Both jumpers placed 4th at their respective class meet back in May of 2021 - Scott finished 4th in the Long Jump in MHSAA 6A, and O'Daniel 4th in the Triple Jump in MHSAA 4A. Scott also added a 7th place finish in the Triple Jump at the 2021 MHSAA 6A State Championships.
The meet prior to both of these athletes was the 2022 Southern Miss High School Invitational, where Scott edged out O'Daniel in the Triple Jump by 4.5 inches, finishing 2nd and 3rd in a loaded field. Scott also won the Long Jump at that same meet.
With these two stars going head-to-head once again, we could potentially see a 44-footer out of Scott or O'Daniel as they go for the win at the 2022 Golden Wave Invitational.
Jumper to Watch: EJ Fisk
The favorite to take the High Jump title at the 2022 Golden Wave Invitational is Saltillo MHSAA 5A State Qualifier EJ Fisk.
Fisk opened up his 2022 outdoor campaign with a 6-2 for the win at the 2022 NMMC Relays. That mark is half a foot of what Fisk opened up in last year at the same meet. This tells us that Fisk is ready to hop on to the podium at this year's MSHAA 5A State Championships, and potentially even go for the win, as he is the #2 returner behind Picayune's Isaac Brice.
With a PR of 6-4, look for Fisk to be pushing that mark on Friday at the 2022 Golden Wave Invitational.
