Preview: HS Boys to Watch at the 2022 Pearl T&F Invitational

EVENTS TO WATCH

800m

Highlighting the field in the boys 800 m run is the sub-two duo from Pearl, Dominic Turner, and Javien Davis.

It seems like Pearl is putting the rest of their distance squad in the 800m as well - included are Brendon Clark and Tanner more, who have both gone 2:04 last track season. Most of that field will also be doubling back from the 1600m, including 1:59 runners Dominic Turner and Javien Davis.

Finally, 2:03 800m runner and 2021 MHSAA 4A 800m Runner-up Tavon Davis will add his own interesting factor into the mix.

While it is very early in the season and hard to predict times, the 800m at the 2022 Pearl Track and Field Invitational will still make for some very exciting racing.

1600m

In the 1600m field of 60 entries, five athletes stand out above the rest. Four out of five of these athletes have broken five minutes for the 1600m, and while Turner may not have done it yet, his abilities in the 800m put him up there as a contender.

Included in this field is 2021 MHSAA 6A 1600m State Qualifier Tanner Moore, 2021 All-MHSAA 6A Cross Country runner Jonathan Phillips, 2021 MHSAA 3A 1600m Runner-up Chase Spring, 2021 MHSAA 4A 800m Runner-up Tavon Davis, 2021 MHSAA 4A 3200m State Medalist Jon Smith, and 2021 MHSAA 1A 1600m Runner-up Bounds Simmons. Along with that, there are numerous sub-17 5k runners, such as Brendan Clark and Maxi Duran.

It will be a good race all the way up till the end and will come down to who wins the battle with 200m-300m to go. With most of these athletes coming from Pearl, there will be a lot of points to be made from the team here.

400m

A few of Mississippi's fastest will be congregating for the 400m at Pearl this weekend. These three of Corvin Johnson, Jamar Chapman, and DeJhuan Garrick ran top 20 400m times last year during outdoor. Magic will be expected to happen as all three have the capabilities to break 50, and this may give Johnson the chance to break the 49-second barrier.

Long Jump

The top three athletes seeded in this field, Jerry Johnson and Marcus Thompson of Pearl and Jessie Williams of Jim Hill, all have what would be top 30 marks from last year, with Johnson and Williams both on their respective podiums at their state meets, and Thompson with significant improvement from last year with his indoor PR of 20-3.25 starting him off well. Add in 2021 MHSAA 3A Long Jump State Medalist Enrico Price, and we have ourselves quite the battle. Can Williams and Price battle it out against Johnson and Williams at the 2022 Pearl Track and Field Invitational? You'll have to watch to find out.
