Weekend Recap: Clinton HS Continues Their Dominance

SPRINTS

60m Dash

Going into this weekend, the focus on the 60m was all on Clinton's Tacherria Lawson and Omari Hampton... and that is exactly how it played out. Lawson led the way with another PR in the 60m, covering the short sprint in 7.77 seconds, good for #10 All-Time, and just 0.05 away from #6 All-Time - that spot currently belongs to 2020 Newton County High School graduate Jada McDougle, currently a sprinter for Mississippi State University.

Hampton led the boy's field with a 7.14 60m, just off of his 7.09 PR that he set last weekend at the Magic City Invitational. Hampton's 7.14 was good enough for a 4th place finish overall, and Hampton's pair of 60's this month are two very solid times for a freshman in high school.

60m Hurdles

Another event that the Clinton High School girls ran the table with was the 60-meter Hurdes, led by Corshunna Hughes and Jenesis Williams. Hughes, a podium finisher at the 2021 MHSAA 6A State Championships in the 110mH, opened up her season last weekend at the Magic City Invitational with a 9.83 60mH PR. This past weekend, Hughes lowered that PR to 9.67 with a 3rd place finish, beating her seed placing by 3 spots! It is clear that Hughes is going for the gold medal this year at the 2022 MHSAA State Championships, and so far, she has taken the right steps in doing so!

Hughes was joined in the 60-meter Hurdles by her teammate, Jenesis Williams, who finished right behind Hughes in 9.97. Both Hughes and Williams finished inside of the Top 6. Clinton's 4x100m will be looking pretty strong this year with the likes of these two and Tacherria Lawson...

400m Dash

Moving over to the 400m, although there was a late scratch from Clinton middle-distance runner Hannah Jackson, Akierah Walker picked up the slack for a 61.42 performance, good for a Top-10 finish and just 0.11 seconds off of her PR. If Walker keeps this up, she will be under 60, and on her way to the state championships in no time!

There was also a late scratch in Mississippi competition on the boy's side in Hampton after he ran the 60m, but Clinton's Frank Bradley-Reed and Miguel Bankston had no problem stealing the show in the high school boy's 400m. The fastest time from Mississippi competition came from Bankston, as he hit an Overall PR of 51.79, his first time ever under 52 seconds! And let's not forget, he did this indoor! ore we get too caught up on Bankston though, there will more on him on the next page as he also ran the show in the 800m as well.

Clinton now has 2 High School Boys that have broken 52 seconds indoor... and it is only the 2nd week of December. Bradley-Reed, the other sub-52 performer besides Bankston, also threw down in the 400m at the Holiday Invitational with a 52.63, coming off of a 7.48 60m he ran earlier that day. Bradley-Reed has now run everything from the 60m to the 800m this indoor season, and let's not forget that he is running all of these sprints coming off of cross country season. I am sure that once Late March/Early April comes, Bradley-Reed will be throwing down some serious times in the 400m.
