Was last years cross country different or are seniors on the end of the season list becoming extinct. The chart below compares the top ten from the Mississippi MileSplit boys and girls 2017 season. On the boys side there are only five seniors on the girls side that are three. Juniors dominate the girls side with six while the other top ten slots on the boys side are juniors. The girls list has two underclassmen in Brooklyn Biancamano (2022) and Emma Claire James (2020).
There are coaches that say that boys mature later so they are more likely to have their best times their junior or senior year. The chart seems to agree with that. While girls supposedly mature earlier and may not continue to improve and the chart does not seem to agree with that. Personally I think training has the most impact on how a runner improves no matter if they are a boy or a girl. Whatever the verdict cross country 2018 might just be one of the best we have seen in a few years with five and seven returning from the top ten.
Look forward to fall 2018 for a great season of cross country in Mississippi.
