Happening this week in the Bottom Six
Hey there! It's me again, Coach Daigle, here to give you The Run Around. This installment I want to review the St. Patrick Invitational that took place on Tuesday 3/13, and take a look ahead at the All State Relays hosted by Ocean Springs High School with a quick look at SSC's Catholic School Challenge.
St. Patrick hosted Long Beach, Hancock, Vancleave, East Central, and Bay High. Long Beach pulled out the win on both sides. On the boys' side, Long Beach scored 149.5 to East Central's 133. On the girls' side, Long Beach scored 223 to Hancock's 130.
I'd like to highlight some of the standout individual performances from the meet, starting with the girls.
Long Beach has an excellent sprint program on the girls' side. Destini Pickens and Muonie Pickens were flying in the 100M Dash, running 12.36, and 12.59 respectively. Destini won the 200 and the 400 as well, where she ran 58.23. There were three pretty good mile times turned in by the girls too: Long Beach's Brooklyn Biancamano ran 5:14, Saint Patrick's Jordan Pete ran 5:46.72, and Lauren Brown of East Central ran 5:47.76. Biancamano won the 3200 as well; she ran a super-fast 11:10.41. Long Beach's Tytianna Burage shined in the Triple Jump, going 34 feet even. Finally, in the throws, Long Beach's Jenna Arenas won Shot with a throw of 30 feet while St. Patrick's Taylor Ibele threw 90-3 winning the Discus.
On the boys' side East Central's Zach Deihl ran 4:54 in the mile while Long Beach's Elijah Paige ran 4:58. Elijah Paige won the two mile, running 10:55.53. There were also 3 boys under 11:10: Cade Meyers of St. Patrick, Adam Taylor of East Central, and Dylan Middleton of St. Patrick. East Central's 4x8 team threw down a 9:04.54, taking over the top time in 4A from SSC. In the field events, Long Beach's Cory Meek went over 6-4 again in the High Jump. Bearcat Tony Pham went over 11 feet in Pole Vault, winning that event. Long Beach's Tyson Callahan long jumped 21-2.5 while Ahmad Hawthorne hit 40 even in the triple. Devin Laneaux of Hancock High won the Discus, throwing 112-01.
this week on the coast, weather permitting, we have the All State Relays hosted
by Ocean Springs and the 5th Annual Catholic School Challenge hosted
by Saint Stanislaus.
The field at the All State Relays is huge! Fifteen teams will compete including: Biloxi, d'Iberville, Gautier, George County, Gulfport, Long Beach, Meridian, Moss Point, Oak Grove, host Ocean Springs, Pascagoula, Pass Christian, Pearl River Central, Saint Martin, and Vancleave.
Let's look at the girls' side first. I think the Long Beach girls are too good to beat. I see the Lady Bearcats winning the meet with host Ocean Springs coming in second. I'd look for Meridian to dominate the boy's side, with Oak Grove and Biloxi fighting for second. I'd love to be there for the 100 Meter Dash - it's going to be fast and close!
For the fifth installment of The Catholic School Challenge, SSC hosts Holy Cross, Brother Martin, Our Lady Academy, Dominican, Mt. Carmel, and Cabrini. This should be a tough test for the Rock-A-Chaws, going up against two bigger schools from New Orleans. Brother Martin and Saint Stanislaus are actually both Brothers of the Sacred Heart Schools, and it will be neat seeing the two go head to head. OLA looks to test their mettle against some familiar foes in all girls' schools Cabrini, Mt. Carmel, and Dominican.
That's it for this week y'all, see you at the track.
