2023 MHSAA 1A Track & Field State Meet Analysis

VIRTUAL MEET: High School Boys | High School Girls

Despite being the smallest classification in the MHSAA, Class 1A is poised to showcase a remarkable array of talent, featuring athletes who can hold their own against the state's finest in running, jumping, and vaulting events.

TCPS Boys Take Center Stage

Tupelo Christian Prep School's boys' team is set to take center stage, aiming for a commanding victory at the 2023 MHSAA 1A Track and Field Championships.

Their recipe for success lies in the exceptional talent of athletes like Bounds Simmons in middle distance events, a formidable middle distance relay squad, and Brewer Bailey in the hurdles, who is also expected to snag a podium spot in the Triple Jump. The depth and range of quality athletes in their roster makes TCPS a force to be reckoned with.

Their distance squad alone, consisting of five standout athletes, has the potential to contribute 44 points to the team's total. With all three pole vaulters poised to sweep the podium, The Eagles have a strong foundation for securing the team title.

The battle for second place promises to be a nail-biter, with Ashland High School and Biggersville High School vying for the coveted spot. Led by 200m title hopeful Olando Evans, Ashland will rely on their exceptional sprints crew to excel in short sprint events and relays, while Biggersville's jumps crew, led by JaThan Hatch and Malachi Stafford, hopes to bridge the point gap and secure a state runner-up title.

Intense Competition Expected Between South Delta & French Camp

South Delta High School and French Camp High School are the top contenders, promising a thrilling competition for spectators and fans alike.

Virtual meet projections indicate a close race, with South Delta predicted to win by a slim two-point margin over French Camp. South Delta's relay teams are expected to be the driving force behind their success, with impressive performances anticipated in the 4x100m, 4x200m, and 4x400m events. The team is also set to score an impressive thirty-six points and secure podium finishes in all four relays.

Hurdles specialist R'Renua Ousley is a key player for South Delta, projected to contribute eighteen points through a victory in the 100mH and a runner-up finish in the 300mH.

On the other hand, French Camp will rely heavily on their exceptional distance crew. The team is set to score an astounding fifty-four points from this group alone. Reigning MHSAA 1A Cross Country Champion Lucy Littlejohn is expected to be a standout performer, aiming for a triple crown in the 800m, 1600m, and 3200m events, potentially earning thirty points for the Lady Panthers. However, she will have TCPS middle-distance ace Anna Bishop Powell standing in her way who enters with season's best of 2:34 and 5:52 in the 800m/1600m, and the pair should offer some thrilling competition in those events.

Kelsey Bridges, another standout distance athlete for the Lady Pantehrs, is anticipated to make a strong showing in the 3200m, along with the school's formidable 4x800m and 4x400m relay teams. French Camp's Olivia Gundy could score an additional fourteen points, giving the team a fighting chance to come from behind and seize the state title.
