As we gear up for another exciting week in Mississippi High School Track and Field, athletes from across the state will be competing for glory in various events.
Here's what to watch for in the week ahead:
MHS Big Blue Invitational - Meridian, MS
- Jeffery Gathright, the Meridian sprinting sensation, is expected to dominate the 100m and 200m events on his home turf.
- Daniel Hill, also from Meridian, will be vying for individual titles in the hurdle events.
- Distance runners Giles Jones and Scott McDonnell from Starkville are looking to sweep the distance events.
- Sterling Scott, a recent runner-up at Nike Indoor Nationals, is one to watch in the jumps.
- Russell Brooks, ranked sixth in the state, will be making his mark in the shot put.
- Middle-distance ace Brianna Brown is the top seed for the Varsity Girls 800m.
- Luxury Wordlaw will be seeking to improve her lifetime best of 5-4 in the High School Girl's High Jump.
Braves Invitational - Iuka, MS
- Reigning MHSAA 1A champions Malachi Stafford, Chandler Ray, and JaThan Hatch will be showcasing their skills in the short hurdles, distance events, and long jump, respectively.
- Middle school prodigy Alexis Mosley will be looking to continue her momentum in the sprints.
Pontotoc Invitational - Pontotoc, MS
- North Mississippi's finest, including Carlando Crump, JaBrysten Abram, Meagan Richardson, Chavarius Garrett, Lukas Dykes, Hannah Sanders, Zech Pratt Jr., Jaheim Bridges, Sophie Santucci, and Brookelyn Morgan, will compete.
- Other notable entries include Parker Shannon, Carmen Owen, Emma Hall, and Saveon Freeman, and will make their 2023 Track and Field debut.
Southwest Mississippi Showcase - Tylertown, MS
- Kendrell Robertson, Jourdan Clements, Jamarcus Garrett, and Wildrekus Johnson will showcase their prowess in the hurdle and sprint events.
- High jumper Henry Hill will have the home field advantage in the Varsity Boys High Jump.
- Charlee Brees Franks and Katie Gates will be looking for wins in their respective events.
Bayou Invitational - Cleveland, MS
- Mississippi State commit Cruz Oguz is set to dominate the 100m and 200m dashes.
- Alex Lopez, with a lifetime best of 147-5 in the discus, will represent Bayou in the throws.
- MSAIS Champion Addison Weems is one to watch in multiple events on the girl's side.
Canton Academy Classic - Canton, MS
- Distance runners Christopher Atkinson, Ella Rankin, Lindsey Hogue, and East Rankin's squad will be battling for top spots.
- Bert Goodloe will attempt to break the 50-second barrier in the Varsity Boys 400m.
- East Rankin's Brayden Warner and Caleb Leach will aim to sweep the throws.
- MSAIS 6A Long Jump runner-up Kaitlyn Elliot will make her season debut.
Jackson Academy Invitational - Jackson, MS
- MSAIS Cross Country Champions Elliot Davis and William Fugate will face off in an exciting matchup.
- A great battle is expected in the Varsity Boys 110mH between William Laird and Jake McMillan.
- Rivers Godwin, the current MSAIS leader in the 400m dash, and Evie Ewing will compete in multiple events.
- Luke Smith, the reigning MSAIS 6A 800m Champion, is another notable entry.
- High Jump specialist Harrison Alexander will attempt to clear the 6-8 barrier.
- Olivia Smith (Jackson Preparatory School), Layla Warren, Mae Ellen Mallet, and Kassidy McMillan will put on a thrilling show in the Varsity Girls events.
- Sydney Collins will go head-to-head in the Varsity Girls 400m.
- The Varsity Girls 800m features a strong lineup including Smith, Warren, Gracie Atkinson, and Riz McBride.
- Annie Toler will pursue the No. 1 spot in female high jumping, while Taylor Caton aims for success in the discus.
PCS Invitational - Hattiesburg, MS
- Mackai McCree will compete in the hurdle events.
- Sean Fairley, the current MSAIS leader in the discus, will represent Christian Collegiate.
- Liv Jordan is set to take on the short sprints on her home track.
- Alice Pennebaker, one of the most versatile athletes in the MSAIS, will be competing.
