Mississippi track and field competition was heating up over the weekend, with impressive performances in a variety of events.

In the 100-meter dash, Omari Hampton from Clinton High stole the show with a time of 10.62, winning the Rumble in the Jungle and now ranked No. 1 in Mississippi and certainly on his way to defending his MHSAA 6A title in the event.

Meanwhile, at the Hattiesburg High Invitational, MHSAA 6A rival Jeffery Gathright from Meridian High took the top spot in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.12, also a Mississippi No. 1 performance.

In the 400-meter dash, Starkville senior Grady Stewart and 2022 MHSAA 6A 400m qualifier continued his undefeated streak in the event, breaking the tape with a time of 51.03 seconds at the Hattiesburg High Invitational. 

In the 800-meter run, Miguel Bankston came in first with a time of 1:59.32, holding off Pearl's Tanner Moore and making it a successful debut for the recent William Carey commit. This was first the 800-meter performance under two minutes in Mississippi High School Boys Outdoor Track and Field this year.

Future William Carey teammate Gavin Wheat of Oak Grove High School won his second 1600-meter race in a row this season, stopping the clock in a lifetime best of 4:27.8 for a new Mississippi No. 1 performance in the event. Wheat is only the second sub-4:30 1600m performer this year, and is continuing the momentum he generated in his season opener at the Pearl Track & Field Season Opener. 

The field events were also impressive, with Madison Central's Julian Winters throwing a lifetime best of 52-0.75 in the shot put. Mississippi College commit Brodie Ezell from Brookhaven High stole the show in the Discus, throwing a distance of 155-9, over thirty feet farther than his season opener last year at the same meet.

Overall, it was a competitive weekend in Mississippi track and field, with many impressive performances to note.
