As we gear up for another exciting week of high school track and field action, all eyes are on the upcoming Starkville High School Season Opener. This meet promises to be a showcase of some of the best young athletes from across Mississippi, with a number of top performers set to take the field.
One of the most highly-anticipated matchups of the meet is the showdown between All-MileSplit Mississippi Cross Country No. 1 Gabe McElwain and Starkville's own Giles Jones in the High School Boys 1600m. McElwain was on an absolute tear during the 2022 Cross Country season, and will no doubt be looking to continue his winning ways and take down the competition.
But Jones, who has also been in top form coming off of a successful indoor season, will be eager to defend his home turf and come out on top.
In addition to this marquee matchup, the meet will also feature a number of other standout performers, including Indoor Long Jump and Triple Jump state record holder Sterling Scott, Mississippi elite high jumpers Alexis Wilburn and Khristan Watson, and Columbus High's A-squad sprints crew, led by Jerquavious Lowery, the reigning MHSAA 5A Champion in the 200m.

But the Starkville High School Season Opener isn't the only meet to watch out for this week. The Warren Central Viking Invitational, taking place in Vicksburg, Mississippi, will also feature a number of MHSAA qualifiers, such as Tyler Arrington, Koury Vample, Trenton Hannah, Jonathan Henderson, Tyler Henderson, Shaniyah Walker, Rodrianna Hall, and Layla Carter. With so many talented athletes on hand, we could see some truly impressive performances and personal bests.
MileSplit Mississippi will be providing comprehensive coverage of the Starkville High School Season Opener, so be sure to tune in and catch all the action as it unfolds.
Whether you're a fan of high school track and field or just looking for some exciting sports action, this is a week you won't want to miss!
