One of the premier events at the 2022 Pearl Track and Field Season Opener, the fast heat of the High School Boys 1600m is off. Here were some of the top entries:
-4:36 1600m runner and 2021 MHSAA 6A 1600m 4th place finisher Tanner Moore
-1:59 800m runner and 2021 MHSAA 6A 800m Runner-up Dominic Turner
-16:37 5k runner and 2021 MHSAA 6A Top-10 Cross Finisher Jonathan Phillips
-4:47 1600m runner and 2021 MHSAA 3A 1600m Runner-up Chase Spring
-2021 MHSAA 1A 800m, 1600m, and 3200m Runner-up Bounds Simmons
-2021 MHSAA 3A 800m 3rd place finisher Tavon Davis
-4:49 1600m runner (4:44 after this race) and 16:54 5k runner Brendan Clark
-16:53 5k runner Maxi Duran
As one can see, this was a loaded field for a season opener and made for a very exciting race.

The race is off, and it was clear very early that the #1 seed and hometown favorite Tanner Moore wanted the lead and inside rail, as he jumped straight to the lead. Dominic Turner, the 800m specialist, took notice and slotted in directly behind Moore, with 4:49 1600m runner positioning himself in third.

After getting out somewhat hard in the first 200m, Moore then controlled the field to a more tactical pace. A group of Moore leading, teammates Turner, Clark, and Duran on his shoulder, Chase Spring, Jonathan Phillips, and Hunter Havens on the inside rail, and Tavon Davis on the inside rail. Bounds Simmons and Denver Carter are in the chase pack.

A lap has gone by, and besides Simmons making move from the chase pack to try and regain contact with the lead group, nothing has changed. They came through in ~2:26. With the likes of Moore, who has gone 4:36 as a freshman, that is what the British Track and Field commentators would call 'Pedestrian Pace'.

Almost immediately after they hit the 800m mark though, it is the underdog Maxi Duran that takes a hold of this race and made it what it was. Duran stormed to the front and broke the field apart, and Moore was the only runner in the field to immediately response. Pictured above is Clark, Turner, Spring, and Phillips made up the chase pack.

Back up front, with 300m to go, Moore made his drive for home from way out, making a huge gear change to shake off Duran. Duran went with him, and Moore one final move for the win.

However, teammates Clark and Turner were closing hard.

Although Clark and Turner made up a little bit of ground on Moore, Moore held on for 1st place, starting out his 2022 outdoor campaign with a win. The final time was 4:42.75, closing his final 800m in ~2:16.

Brendan Clark and Dominic Turner came in for 2nd and 3rd for huge PR's of 4:44 and 4:45. As a matter of fact, Turner's PR of 4:45 was the first time he has broken five minutes in the 1600m.
