MHSAA State Cross Country Meet Classics: 2007 6A Boys Race

Starting us off in the state meet classics series, we have the stacked Tupelo High School team of the 2007 cross country season.

This team and their performances in the 2007 cross country season were very reminiscent of this year's Brookhaven high school cross country squad. As a matter of fact, at the state meet both Tupelo and Brookhaven put four in the top four, something that is very hard to do in the large school divisions. Here are Tupelo's top 5 PR's of that 2007 season versus Brookhaven's Top 5 of the 2021 season:

Brookhaven (2021)Tupelo (2007)
Sam Arnold - 15:47Max Holman - 15:57
Grayson Childress - 16:02Rob Ellis - 16:05
Jake Thompson - 16:34Gordon Lee - 16:13
Trey Knott - 16:36Jeff Wilson - 16:34
Collin Kellum - 16:50Roderick Mosely - 17:21

I don't about y'all, but that looks like that would stack up to be a great race between these 2 teams!!

Overall, Tupelo went 1, 2, 3, 4, and 7 to score 17 points in total. To my knowledge, that is the lowest that a team has scored in the large school division of Mississippi high school at a state cross country meet. Also like Brookhaven, their top 2 scorers were sub-16 5K runners, and their number 3, Gordon Lee, was in the 16-teens. Lee went on to run 15:56 the following season, and Max Holman went on to run 15:19 at Choctaw Trails in his senior season - This serves as the Mississippi High School Boys State Meet record until Christian Balcer's 15:13 in 2020.

Who would have won in a duel meet between Tupelo 2007 and Brookhaven 2021? To officially figure this out, we would also have to factor in the dragonflies that Tupelo high school would wear in today's day and age... ;)

Take a scroll through history as you glance at tupelos dominating state meet performance in 2007, and maybe click on Max Holman's and Rob Ellis's profile to see what they did and their careers.
