Chase Rose On His View Of Running

Chase Rose, Kirk Academy/Oxford High is one of the best cross country runners in the MAIS, with a time of 16:40 for a 5k to prove it. He's been a dedicated runner since the 6th grade and was inspired to run by his father and sister. "My dad was a big runner at the time since he was competing in Ironman triathlons, and Morgan Claire was running, so I thought I'd give it a try."

Not only was Chase inspired by his father to join the cross country team, but he was lucky enough to be coach by him as well. "It's really fun to be coached by him and it's easy to talk to him about running, especially right before a big race."

Chase's best race was during the 2019 XC season at the MRA invitational. "That was a great meet and not only did I hit a personal best, but came in first place." Every runner has at least one bad race, and when asked Chase said it was the 2019 Watson-Ford Invitational. "That was one of the worst races I've ever ran; it was hot and I felt very sick after crossing the finish line."

Even though Chase is excellent on the cross country course, he prefers the track. "I enjoy the shortness and speed of the sport compared to running on a hilly course for 3.1 miles." During track season, he run the 1600 and 800 meter race.

Besides running on the cross country and track team, Chase also plays basketball. The thrill of sinking the ball through the net, the competitive spirit, and running up and down the court are just some of the many things of why he loves it. His passion for the basketball and running has brought him to the transfer to Oxford High School for his senior year. Chase saw the switch as an opportunity, "My dad is good friends with the basketball coach there, and they have one of the best cross country teams in the state, so it's kind of the best of both worlds."

"We had our first cross country practice last Monday and it was great, but different compared to my old school because Oxford has a bigger team aspect and now I can run with other guys at my pace."

On the topic about running in college, Chase says if given a scholarship he would want to take it. It exciting to think about being a college athlete, and Mississippi College has shown interest in him.

Chase explains what he likes the most about running is the feeling after a good workout or crossing the finish line after winning an amazing race. "You feel euphoric afterwards and relieved that all your hard work paid off."

"My advice to any of the runners who are struggling right now, is to not give up. This year is especially difficult with tons of things being uncertain, but keep working hard and try to motivate yourself by giving it 100% effort everyday."
