Senior Hero's: Jerricka Ambus, Brandon High

Name: Jerricka Ambus
School: Brandon High School

Q: What does your training look like right now given the current situation?
A: At home abs workouts and around the neighborhood running.

Q: What are you doing to stay busy other than run right now?
A: Working because my job is still open, online schoolwork, watching old track videos, watching Netflix and Hulu shows.

Q: What was your most memorable race/moment?
A: My most memorable race would have to be the 100 meter hurdles at the State championship my 10th grade year. That race was my first time placing 1st at state.

Q: What was the funniest thing that happened during your running career?
A: The funniest thing that ever happened to me during a race was my first ever hurdles race. I was in 8th grade and was just moved up to varsity and fell going over the second hurdle and the whole team laughed at me.

Q: Who would you consider your biggest competition over your four years?
A: Over my last four years, I had a different biggest competitor each year.
My Freshmen year: De'kari Courtney from Pearl.
My Sophomore year: Asia Poe from Madison Central and Lyric Reed from Pearl.
My Junior year: Tatiyana Jennings from Meridian.
My Senior Year: Tatiyana Jennings from Meridian and Camille McGee from Pearl

Q: What was your greatest accomplishment?
A: My greatest accomplishment is having 7 state championships under my name, 3 of which are first place.

Q: If you could do it all over again what would you change about your running career in high school?
A: I would change my school not having a track facility. I would also change starting high jump in 7th grade instead of 10th grade because I love high jumping now.

Q: What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?
A: The most difficult obstacle for me to overcome was learning how to 3-step in the 100 meter hurdles. The 3-step is one of the most important skills to have for that event. It took about three weeks for me to learn, utilize and perfect. It was the most overwhelming thing I have ever had to do, but it has paid off greatly for me.

Q: What will you miss the most?
A: I will miss high school track as a whole. If I had to choose specifically then I will miss the feeling that I have every time I step on the track, the butterflies in my stomach before the race starts and the relief in my chest when the race is over.

Q: What advice would you give to younger athletes?
A: I would tell the younger athletes to work really hard and to trust your training in-order to achieve your goal. Never get in your head that things will just come to you because there is always going to be someone out there who is more hard working than you are. I would also tell them that you have to have patience, it is a good thing to happen, especially in Track and Field.

Q: What kind of an impact has your coach had on you and your team?
A:  My coaches have had a very very good impact on my team and I. Each one of my coaches play a huge part in why I am the athlete that I am today. My coaches pushed us very hard at every practice and always expected a great performance from everyone at every meet. They always had the right thing to say and the best plan to fix performance problems. I could not talk about being a great track runner without including my coaches, because it was not all me. I love my coaches and teammates dearly and I have had the best 6 years of Track and Field with them.

Q: What are your college plans?
A: I plan to go to college to study Kinesiology.

Q: Who would you like to say 'thank you' too?
A: I would like to say thank you to my family and friends for supporting me no matter what. I would like to say thank you to my coaches for never giving up on me when I was giving up on myself and making me understand that I have to trust the process. I would like to give a special thank you to my teammates, especially the other seniors for making through those long hard workouts, cheering for me at track meets and for just being my second family I knew I could always find comfort in. Lastly, I would like to say thank you to the Milesplit team for taking the worst/ best photos of me

Q: Is there anything else you'd like to add?
A: I would like to add something more to the younger athletes. Have fun while you can and always make sure you're getting to your goals because you'll never know what can happen. Unfortunately for me and my fellow c/o 2020 track runner Covid-19 happened.
