An Interview with Giacomo DeLuca

by DP Daigle

Giacomo DeLuca is a senior at George County High School in Lucedale, MS.  Deluca has had a successful career both in Cross Country and Track & Field.  He finished 29th overall at the State Meet in Cross Country last year, and has two Individual State Championships in the mile on the track.

DP:  What is your name, what grade are you in, and what school do you go to?

GD:  My name is Giacomo Deluca and I'm a senior at George County.

DP:  What is your GPA and ACT score?

GD:  I have a 3.8 GPA and I scored a 30 on the ACT.

DP:  That's impressive! What is your current Personal Record (Best Time)?

GD:  My 5K PR is 17:12.  In track I have run the 1600M in 4:26, the 1500M in 4:01, the 800M in 1:57.4, and the 400M in 51 seconds.

DP:  What is the next goal or time that you are trying to hit?

GD:  I just want to get better every time I'm out.

DP:  What is your favorite workout your Coach has you do?

GD:  I don't have a favorite, it all hurts.

DP:  What are your plans after high school?

GD:  I definitely plan on going to college.

DP:  Do you have any superstitions on race day or perhaps an odd pre-race routine?

GD:  No, I'm not superstitious at all.

DP:  Gatorade or Powerade?

GD:  I prefer Powerade.

DP:  Your Jersey aka singlet, tucked or untucked?

GD:  Tucked.

DP:  Do you have a favorite meal the night before a race?

GD:  I load up on pasta the night before a race.

DP:  Do you like ice baths?

GD:  No, definitely not.

DP:  Name a lesson that running and training as a runner has taught you.

GD:  Don't make a bad day a bad week, a bad week a bad month, a bad month a bad year. Wake up and reset." - Barry Brokaw

DP:  Do you have a rival runner?  Or who is your team's biggest rival?

GD:  My rival has and always will be the clock.

DP:  What do you do to recover after a race?

GD:  Eat!

DP:  Nice, What is your favorite thing about your coach?

GD:  My coaches care more about me as a person rather than just a runner.  I can tell they really care about my well being.

DP:  What is the strangest thing you've seen during a race?

GD:  I had two huge german shephards barking at me during a race once.

DP:  Who is your biggest fan?

GD:  That would be my family.

DP:  What advice would you like to share with younger runners, maybe the JH kids on your team?

GD:  Make someone prove that they are better than you.

DP:  Is there anything else you want to share with the MileSplit community?

GD:  My goal is to be on a podium in 2020!

DP:  Awesome, thanks for chatting with me today!
