US#7 Pole Vaulter, Julie Segroves, Returns to La. Saturday!

Last week, Biloxi sophomore Julie Segroves came up just short of rewriting the record books at the LSU High School Classic. If at first track meet of 2023 you don't succeed, try, try again. That's exactly what the US#7 vaulter will do as she heads east on I-10 again to compete in the McNeese Indoor No. 1 Meet in Lake Charles.

Seagroves won the Classic with a jump of 12-11.75, a little over ten inches higher than her closest competition.

"I was happy with my final jump (at LSU HS Classic), but I knew I could've made the 13'3" jump. Unfortunately, I just didn't have the right pole. My main goal currently is to stay consistent at these heights and always go a little higher, as well as breaking the milestone of 14 feet this outdoor season. What I will carry with me over into the outdoor season is my ability to compete under pressure successfully and to have the mental fortitude to try new poles, which is what I had to do today."

While Segroves will have to wait until next year to break Heather Abadie's LSU Classic meet record of 13-6.5, she will have a another shot of putting her name in the record books this Saturday at the McNeese Indoor No. 1.

Whitney Adams added her name to the meet record book ten years ago when she jumped 11-5.75, tying the record of Addison Martinez, who set the meet record in the pole vault the year before in 2012.

Segroves is no stranger to breaking records. Last month, she claimed the Mississippi Indoor girls record with a jump of 13-2 at the Texas Elite Pole Vault Explosion.

With all eyes on Segroves in the field events this Saturday at the McNeese Indoor No. 1, it makes the second week in a row that a Mississippi pole vaulter has taken center stage. Last week, besides Segroves winning the girls' pole vault, it was John Scott Kendricks, who broke Mississippi's indoor state record with a vault of 16-5.25.

In the nation, Kendricks ranks US#4, just three inches behind Swain County, North Carolina's Matthew Gray's 16-8, heading into the weekend as he travels to Fayetteville, AR Saturday for the Arkansas High School Invitational
