Top 5 Moments From World Youth Trials - Day 1

Candace Hill's cruise control is still faster than the rest

Even when Candace Hill tries to run slow, she still looks fast and the competition has no chance. No better example than her preliminary heat of the 100 meter dash at the World Youth Trials on Tuesday in Lisle, Illinois. The new high school national record holder in the 100 (10.98 at Brooks PR) shifted into cruise control mid-race, yet still finished near four tenths of a second ahead of the New Balance Nationals 100 meter champ Jayla Kirkland (11.80) with a 11.37 clocking by the sophomore from Georgia.

Hill might be the best talent for Team USA at the World Youth Championships as she has the potential to be a double gold medalist in both the 100 and 200 meter dash in Cali, Colombia in a few weeks if she get through the finals tomorrow at the trials as a top two finisher.

An upset of Hill seems unlikely in the 100, but the 200 should see a much closer race for Hill as she comes in as the second fastest qualifier (23.74) from the prelims by another star sophomore in Lauren Rain Williams from Oaks Christian in California. Williams clocked a 23.70 in the trials, but both have ran under 23 seconds in wind-aided performances this season.

The 100 and 200 meter dash may be the two toughest events to make the World Youth team in for the United States as seven girls dipped under 12 seconds in the 100 trials, especially since Candace Hill is virtually a gimmee to take one of the two Team USA spots in both events.
