Way Too Early XC Rankings: MAIS 4A Boys

RETURNER XC RANKINGS: MAIS 4A Boys

In the high-stakes world of Mississippi cross country, few storylines are as intriguing as the upcoming MAIS 4A Boys Cross Country Championships. Last season's breakout star, Stratton Terrell, is already primed to be the headliner of this year's competition, while several school teams are looking equally competitive.

Terrell, the reigning MAIS 4A Cross Country Champion from Tri County Academy, enters this season already ahead of the pack. As a rising sophomore, Terrell's prowess on the field is nothing short of impressive. Last year, the fresh-faced talent took the field by storm in the final mile at Choctaw Trails, surprising the audience and his competitors. Backed by a track record that includes a second-place finish in the 3200m and third in the 1600m at the 2023 MAIS 4A Track and Field Championships, Terrell is no stranger to the podium.

In the upcoming season, Terrell is the only returner who has broken the 19-minute mark in the 5K, setting him nearly a full minute ahead of his closest competition. Barring any unforeseen circumstances or injuries, Terrell appears poised to defend his MAIS 4A title.

While Terrell is shaping up to be the individual to watch, the team title is equally tantalizing with a whirl of possibilities. Last year saw Christian Collegiate Academy win by a hair's breadth against Canton Academy. This year, however, the Academy Bulldogs will face fierce competition from Washington School, which boasts an incredibly strong trio: JD Bennett, Cashion Doolittle, and Evan Hardin.

Washington School's power trio could realistically secure three of the top five spots. In a classification as tight as this, such an achievement could make it virtually impossible for other schools to catch up. But Christian Collegiate is not a team to underestimate. They're known for their well-rounded approach and will undoubtedly give Washington a run for their money on race day.

Another team to keep an eye on is Kirk Academy. With a close-knit group of runners, they could play the role of spoiler, upsetting the expected standings if they hit their stride on the day.

In conclusion, while we may have our early front-runners, the MAIS 4A Boys Cross Country Championships are far from a foregone conclusion.

With the level of talent and competitiveness on display, spectators and fans are in for an absolute thriller this season.
