Meet Recap: 2023 MHSAA T&F Middle School Classic

Michael Williams dominates in the Discus

Oxford's Michael Williams has become a force to be reckoned with in his first year of competitive track, winning in both his home meet and in Tupelo prior to the MHSAA Middle School Track and Field Classic.

Williams set a massive lifetime best, beating his old mark by 10 feet and taking the win by a sizable margin with a mark of 124-6.

If he can adjust to the varsity level, Williams could potentially fill the hole left by Keegan Wilfawn in the Oxford throwers squad.

Sydney Garner continues undefeated streak in Girls Discus

Sydney Garner of Brandon Middle School continued her undefeated discus streak in her first competitive season to take the title in Pearl.

The seventh grader has won in middle school meets at Northwest Rankin and Madison Central, and also took the Little Six title just one week prior.

All in all, Garner has a very bright future ahead of her as she has the option to throw on the middle school level for another year or make the early jump to varsity.

Amos Varnado shines in Shot Put

Amos Varnado from Porter Middle School has proven himself to be a great throwing talent at such a young age, particularly in the shot put.

The seventh grader earned his third win of the season on Tuesday and threw an impressive 48-02. If Varnado is able to handle the heavier shot, then he could already be the best shot putter for Canton.

He has put up some very impressive marks for a seventh grader and I am looking forward to seeing what he will do next.

Takayla Pope takes home Girls Shot Put title

South Panola's Takayla Pope put together a strong performance to win the girls shot out with a mark of 30-6.25.

The eighth grader has had a successful first year, outclassing all of her competition in North Mississippi. Her mark this week was a personal best by almost a foot.

Pope has definitely had a successful season and ended things on a high note on Tuesday at the MHSAA Middle School Track and Field Classic
