Mississippi track and field competition was heating up over the weekend, with impressive performances in a variety of events.

Valencia Watson of Ridgeland High and Tacherria Lawson of Clinton High had a thrilling battle in the 100-meter dash at the Rumble in the Jungle, Watson edging out Lawson with both athletes running 12.03 seconds. Clinton High's Zharia Bonner followed close behind in third place with a time of 12.15 seconds. Watson continued her dominance, taking first place with a time of 24.70 seconds, and is now ranked No. 1 in Mississippi in both events. 

Gulfport's Lania McDonald secured the No. 1 ranking in Mississippi at the Prince Jones Relays, winning with a time of 58.37 seconds. South Panola senior Samyra Wright also broke 60 seconds at the out-of-state Northridge Black & Blue Invitational, winning in 59.20 seconds. Once you add in Biloxi's Addison Yelverton to the equation, the 2023 MHSAA 6A 400m is looking to be another great race this season.
