Mississippi track and field competition was heating up over the weekend, with impressive performances in a variety of events.

Valencia Watson of Ridgeland High and Tacherria Lawson of Clinton High had a thrilling battle in the 100-meter dash at the Rumble in the Jungle, Watson edging out Lawson with both athletes running 12.03 seconds. Clinton High's Zharia Bonner followed close behind in third place with a time of 12.15 seconds. Watson continued her dominance, taking first place with a time of 24.70 seconds, and is now ranked No. 1 in Mississippi in both events.

Gulfport's Lania McDonald secured the No. 1 ranking in Mississippi at the Prince Jones Relays, winning with a time of 58.37 seconds. South Panola senior Samyra Wright also broke 60 seconds at the out-of-state Northridge Black & Blue Invitational, winning in 59.20 seconds. Once you add in Biloxi's Addison Yelverton to the equation, the 2023 MHSAA 6A 400m is looking to be another great race this season.

Charlee Brees Franks had a successful season opener, winning the weekend in the 800m with a performance of 2:31.1, and won both the 800m and 1600m at the Hattiesburg High Invitational

Pearl's Katherine Neal took the Mississippi High School Girls' distance running scene by storm, putting down a Mississippi No. 1 performance of 5:26.2 in the 1600m, good enough to win the Rumble in the Jungle

At the Goula Invitational, Ashton Rainey and Sarah Litton of Ocean Springs High School put on an impressive performance in the 3200-meter run. Rainey clocked a lifetime best of 11:35.50, while Litton finished close behind with a time of 11:41.43, also a lifetime best. These outstanding performances have elevated Rainey and Litton to the No. 2 and 3 spots, respectively, in the state rankings.

Lenasia Drummond, an 8 x MHSAA 5A Champion, had a successful debut at the Hattiesburg High Invitational, winning both the 100mH and 300mH. Drummond's time of 14.59 seconds in the 100mH was the fastest of the weekend, closely followed by Corshunna Hughes from Clinton High with a time of 15.09 seconds at the Rumble in the Jungle.

However, in the 300mH, it was Clinton's Jenesis Williams who stole the show with a Mississippi No. 1 performance and lifetime best time of 46.54 seconds.

In the field events, Meagan Womack continued her dominance in the throws at the Rumble in the Jungle. The Mississippi State signee threw a lifetime best of 140-8 in the Discus, winning the event by a wide margin. Womack also won the Shot Put, throwing an impressive distance of 41-11.75.

Behind Womack, Cierra Crusoe from Columbus High took second place in the Shot Put with a throw of 34-7.5, while fellow Lady Arrow Ruby Romig took second place in the Discus with a toss of 103-5.

Lastly, Julie Segroves, who holds the Indoor and Outdoor state records in the Pole Vault, continued her dominance in the event by winning the Prince Jones Relays with a mark of 13 feet.

Overall, it was a competitive weekend in Mississippi track and field, with many impressive performances to note.
