Weekend Review: HS Girls to Watch at the 2022 Clinton S.0.

Meagan Womack | Clinton High School | Shot Put and Discus

Starting us off on the high school girls' watch list is someone who has some huge momentum coming off of the indoor season, and that is Clinton High's, Meagan Womack.

If Womack's 2021-22 indoor season shocked us (she broke the state record three different times), there is no telling what she will have in store for us in the 2022 outdoor season.

Womack is entered in both the shot put and discus, and the Clinton Season Opener will be the official start for the current Mississippi queen of the throws.

Lenasia Drummond (Hattiesburg High School) v.s. Corshunna Hughes (Clinton High School) | 100mH

At the first meet of the outdoor season, the top two indoor hurdles in the state, AKA Lenasia Drummond and Corshunna Hughes, are getting after it early and giving the people what they want, as they will go head-to-head in the 100mH.

Hughes just finished a fantastic indoor season where she hit overall PR's in three different events: The 60mH, the long jump, and the triple jump. Drummond also finished the indoor season out leading all of those events. In the jumps, Drummond went 17-8.75 in the long jump (MS #3 All-time, ) and 38-0.25 in the triple jump(MS #3 All-time, #38 in the nation), placing inside of the Top 2 at every single meet. In the 60mH... Well of course, we all know that she broke the state record at Last Chance with a time of 8.84 seconds - That mark currently ranks #33 in the nation.

As one can certainly see from Drummond's 2022 indoor season resume, she is coming into the outdoor track and field season very fit.

Drummond will have some work cut out for her in the 110mH, though, with the likes of Clinton's Corshunna Hughes, the #2 ranked runner in the state in the 60mH behind Drummond. Hughes finished inside of the Top 5 in all four indoor events that she ran, coming with a PR of 9.26 at Last Chance (MS #7 All-time). Hughes is a 2021 MHSAA 6A State Qualifier in the 100mH, and is also the 2021 MHSAA 6A North State Champion in the same event - This was actually the last meet that was held at Clinton High School. As I have mentioned numerous times, it's early in the season.

This means that we may not get perfect weather, and the goal isn't to peak in February. However, both Hughes and Drummond are both coming off of very successful indoor seasons, and we may be surprised by the results after the two go head to head at the Clinton Season Opener.

Tacherria Lawson | Clinton High School | 100m

Finally, the last athlete to be previewed is yet another Clinton athlete on a hot streak coming off of the indoor track season, and that is 7.77 60m runner Tacherria Lawson.

Lawson has been wildly consistent on the 2021-22 indoor circuit, finishing inside of the Top 2 in all four meets that she competed in, and running 7.80 or faster in three of them. Those times are some great improvements on where she was last outdoor season, and her starting point this year is already way ahead of where she was last year.

Although she does have some work cut out for her with a loaded field in the 100m (read about it here), she has a chance to open up her season with a 100m win, as well as hit a big PR.
