Sean Fairley Breaks Mississippi HS State Record in Discus

BILOXI, Miss. (Feb. 27, 2026) -- For nearly three years, Sean Fairley of West Harrison High School has been dominating the discus scene in Mississippi, steadily climbing toward a goal that every athlete dreams of: a state record. On February 21 at the Biloxi High Invitational, that dream became reality. Sean launched a massive 196 feet, 1 inch, breaking the previous state record by two inches and instantly claiming the top spot in Mississippi history.

The journey to this record started back in 2022, during his 8th-grade season. Sean finished that year undefeated with a 145-2 throw, showing flashes of the talent that would soon make him a household name in Mississippi track and field. His freshman year elevated him from "special" to "one of a kind." At the 2023 MSAIS Track and Field Championships, he threw 176-0, shattering the freshman state record by over 15 feet, even though he fell just short of the overall state title to the legendary Roury McCloyen from St. Joseph Catholic.

Sophomore year turned dreams into tangible goals. Sean consistently threw in the 160s and 170s, capturing his first state title and posting top national marks. At the USATF National Junior Olympic Championships, he threw 185-0.75, claiming the sophomore state record by nearly 20 feet and moving into second place all-time in Mississippi.

His junior season saw Sean inching closer to the elusive 195-foot state record. Early throws of 188-5 and 187-11 showed he was ready, and a regional meet mark of 189-2 tied the junior class record set by Roury McCloyen. That year, Sean earned his second state title and another podium finish at the Junior Olympics.

This year, as a senior, Sean has three class records, two state titles, and a podium finish at the Junior Olympics under his belt. He started the season with a strong 178-9 at the Tony Dees Goula Invitational, hinting that something special was on the horizon. Five days later, at Biloxi High, Sean delivered, launching 196-1, breaking the state record and moving to U.S. #1 while closing in on the 200-foot mark.

According to his coaches, this record is just the beginning. With the spring and summer seasons ahead, Sean Fairley could push the limits even further. For now, he has cemented his place in the Mississippi record books as the best discus thrower the state has ever seen.
