Miss. HS T&F: Distance Runners to watch on March 11, 2022

Distance Runners to Watch at the 2022 Fleet Feet Track Classic

Athlete to Watch: William Fugate

Keep an eye out for the Madison St. Joseph athlete, William Fugate, who is looking to complete the 1600m/3200m double.

He is the 2021 MAIS 5A Cross Country State Champion and is also a 2 x MHSAA 4A State Champion. Fugate is a menace on the grass, showing his stellar aerobic strength this past cross country season, where he ran 16:00 for the 5k at 2021 RunningLane Championships.

Expect this St. Joe stand-out to be the main contender to take the victory in the 3200m at the 2022 Fleet Feet Track Classic.

Shana Sellers the clear favorite in the Distance Events

On the girl's side, the Pearl senior and Mississippi College Commit Shana Sellers is the clear favorite to take both victories in the 1600m and 3200m.

She is had an impressive runner-up finish at the 2021 Mississippi Meet of Champions and podium finish at the MHSAA 6A State Championship.

She has had a solid start to her outdoor campaign running 5:37.34 in the 1600m and 12:19.85 in the 3200m.

Another notable entry, her teammate Hannah Moore is coming off a fresh PR in the 800m and could have some say in the 1600m.

Expect Sellers and her teammate to be the frontrunners in the distance events at the 2022 Fleet Feet Track Classic.

Pearl Boys to stack up the 800m/1600m

On the boys side, Pearl High School is loading the 800m and 1600m fields.

Javien Davis and Dominic Turner are two strong half-mile runners, both of them having sub-2 performances on their resume. They will also be accompanied by their teammate Brendan Clark, who has PR's of 2:03 and 4:40 in the 800m/1600m.

Also keep an eye out for the Port Gibson athlete JoeDarrius Dorsey, who won the 2022 Southern Miss High School Invitational, holding off Turner and Madison Central's Ben Owens to get an exceptional time of 2:01.37.

With the quality we have in this field, expect to see a possible sub-2 performance at the 2022 Fleet Feet Track Classic.

Pearl High School is also expected to dominate the 1600m. Tanner Moore is the main contender to take the victory.

He has shown an impressive skillset so far this season, demonstrating lethal closing speed at the end of his 1600m races. He will be joined by Dominic Turner who will be doubling the 1600m and 800m, and recently had a big PR of 4:45.17 at the 2022 Pearl Track and Field Opener.

Whether it is the 1600m or 800m, expect to see the Pearl Pirates breaking the tape of the 2022 Fleet Feet Track Classic.
