Weekend Review: HSG Events to Watch at the 2022 Clinton S.0.

100m dash

We have an absolutely loaded field in the high school girl's 100m dash at the 2022 Clinton Season Opener this weekend. From State Medalists and Qualifiers across multiple classes to girls that are rolling off of outstanding indoor seasons, the Varsity Girls' fast heat at Clinton on Saturday will have it all.

Leading the field is the MHSAA 5A State Medalist from Laurel High School, Kalli Husband. Husband is seeded with a 12.51 that she ran at the 2021 MHSAA 5A State Meet, which is the last time that she stepped onto the track. She will be facing a hard-charging Clinton crew with the likes of 7.77 60m runner Tacherria Lawson, seeded just 0.02 seconds behind the MHSAA 5A 100m State Medalist. Lawson is coming off of an incredible season where she was the #2 ranked high school girl in the 60m dash, only behind Kennedi Sanders. Lawson is leading a strong Clinton contingent including 7.92 60m runner Zharia Bonner, the #3 ranked high school girl in the 60m, as well as Nakirsten Hughes

With MHSAA 5A 200m State Qualifier and 400m state champion De'Aerria Hannah also joining the party, we could potentially see some fireworks in the High School Girls 100m dash at the 2022 Clinton Season Opener! I know it is early in the season and there is also no telling what the weather will be like, but at the very least, we could see where athletes are currently at in their fitness and what we could potentially see as we get closer into April and May.

400m dash

Next up, another exciting event to watch in the high school girl's competition will be the 400-meter dash! The top three seeds of Hannah Jackson, De'Aerria Hannah, and Akierah Walker all have experience at the Large School State Championship level, and teammates Jackson and Walker are fresh off of some 400m PR's in the indoor season.

As we mentioned earlier, Hannah will be coming off of the 100m when she gets into the blocks in the fast heat of the 400m. However, this is her primary event, and that would be a very impressive double for the sophomore if she were able to snag a win over one of the best 400m duos in the state.

Sadly, we will have to wait a little bit longer for Hannah Jackson's 800m debut. However, there is no telling how quick she and Walker will go if they get the right conditions. Walker will also be vying to get her first-ever sub-60 in the 400m of her career and looks to have a very good opportunity to do so. All in all, this 400m will feature some of the best 400m runners in the state and will surely be one to watch for.

Triple Jump

Moving on over to the field, we have a star-studded field in the triple jump where it is looking to be a Clinton v. Hattiesburg duel, two of the best high school girl's track teams in the state. Leading the way is the new 60mH state record holder showing off her talents in the Triple Jump, Lenasia Drummond of Hattiesburg.

Drummond, the 2021 MHSAA 5A Triple Jump State Champion and runner-up at the Mississippi Meet of Champions is coming off an absolutely astounding indoor season where she did the 60mH/Long Jump/Triple Jump triple on three different occasions, hitting PR's in all three disciplines. In the Triple Jump, Drummond put down a mark of 38 feet and a quarter of an inch, breaking the 38 foot barrier in the Triple Jump for the first time in her career. Drummond has set herself up for a great junior season on the outdoor oval, and she will have some great competition to do.

That competition entails the 2021 MHSAA 6A Triple Jump State Champion Aniya Madkin of Clinton High. That's right - The MHSAA 5A and 6A will be facing off against each other! Madkin is also coming off of an outstanding indoor season where she hit a 34-8.5, the second farthest triple jump of her career, and she did this in January. Throw MHSAA 5A State Qualifier Kymiah Hilton into the equation, and the podium will be a hard one to make this Saturday at the Clinton Season Opener Competition breeds competition, and I can't wait to see how this one plays out.

High Jump

We also have a slew of past and potential state qualifiers in the High School Girls High Jump, with Eleanor Scott of Clinton High leading the way. Scott is the lone female jumper that has jumped 5 feet in her career and is also a state qualifier in the Triple Jump.

However, Scott will be joined by her teammate and 2021 MHSAA 6A State Champion in the Triple Jump, Aniya Madkin, who jumped 4 feet and 10 inches in the indoor season for a Mississippi #1. Madkin and Scott will be trying to go 1-2 on the podium in the High Jump, but they will have MHSAA 5A Runner-up in the High Jump LaTerria Brister of Hattiesburg, as well as 4-10 High Jumper Ramallah Brown of Greenville HS. Brister is also coming off indoor, where she went 4-6 in the High Jump, as well as 8.22 in the 60m.

As I have mentioned time and time again, as well as the rankings speaking for themselves, Clinton is the #1 ranked track and field time in the state going into the early phase of the outdoor season. It will be exciting to see how high they set the bar, both in the high jump and as a team, on Saturday at their home season opener.
