Mississippi Indoor Track and Field: 2022 Ice Breaker Preview

FIELD

High School Girl's Shot Put

Headlining the Mississippi High School Girl's Field contingent is none other than the new STATE RECORD HOLDER in the Shot Put, Meagan Womack. Like I have been saying this winter, it is clear that Clinton High School has been putting in the work this indoor season, and Womack was a strong testament to that hard work at her first outing when she threw her state record throw of 35-3.75. So far this indoor circuit, her performances would have been some of her better throws last outdoor season, and it's not like she was doing bad! That just shows how impressive her indoor season has been so far this year. With 3 more weeks of work under her belt, who knows what she could have in store for us this weekend...

High School Boy's Pole Vault

Another main athlete to look out for in the field action this weekend is none other than the #1 Pole Vaulter in the state, John Scott Kendricks! Kendricks, who just coming off of a 15-7 Indoor PR in Arkansas, seemingly thrives under pressure. He is undefeated so far on the indoor circuit this year, and will be facing off against      17-1 indoor pole vaulter Maddox Hamm from Scottsboro. While that may be a tall task (no pun intended) for Kendricks to compete with someone of that caliber, I definitely would not take him out of the competition as I know he will surely be gunning for the win and new heights in the pole vault.

High School Girls 'Jumps'

For the sake of time, the last preview paragraph will combine the high school girl's long jump and triple jump.

As we mentioned earlier, Lenasia Drummond will not only be competing in the hurdles, but will also be showcasing her talents in the jumps as well. She is the #2 seed in the Triple Jump and #3 in the Long Jump heading into this weekend and is a state champion in both disciplines. She has indoor PR's of 17-0 feet in the long jump and 35-11.5 in the Triple Jump. Like I mentioned earlier, Drummond is a HUGE competitor who is simply good at winning, and expect her to go for the win and hit some big-time marks in the process this weekend.

In the Triple Jump, Drummond will be going against a very strong Clinton trio led by Aniya Madkin, the 2021 MHSAA 6A State Champion in the Triple jump and has finished in the Top 2 in both of her previous indoor track and field meets this year. Just recently, Madkin leaped to a 34-8.5 Indoor PR at the Holiday Invitational. Madkin is the #4 seed overall heading into this big meet this weekend, and could potentially be due for another PR alongside her teammates Latoria Spence and Eleanor Scott, and Biloxi's Tineka Adams could also be in the conversation as well. As a matter of fact, all of these athletes listed have a big shot at a Top-10 Finish.

Finally, LaTerria Brister, Drummond's teammate and state qualifier in the Long Jump, will be another athlete to watch in that event.
