Senior Heroes Kamdyn Skinner, Pass Christian

Mississippi Senior Heros 2020

Would You Like To Be A Senior Hero? Here Is What To Do?

Name: Kamdyn Skinner

School: Pass Christian High School

Q: What does your training look like right now given the current situation?

A: I like to ride bikes and run with my sister, but I also do ab workouts, leg workouts, and yoga.

Q: What are you doing to stay busy other than run right now?

A: I do my school work and prepare for college. I'm trying to get everything on the checklist done before I go to orientation.

Q: What was your most memorable race/moment?

A: My most memorable moment was when I was a freshman and it was my first time competing in high jump at the state track meet. It was down to the final two, and it was our last jump at 5'2. My competitor missed the bar leading me to my last jump. When I took my final jump, I had made the bar and I had won. Only two years ago I had been told I was not good enough to compete in high jump at the meets, but I continued to train and build up muscles that have been stored away.

Q: What was the funniest thing that happened during your running career?

A: My 8th grade year, my school hosted the south state track meet. I was on the 4x4 team that year and I was 2nd leg. After the first 100, you are all supposed to merge into the 1st lane, I never merged and so I ran the whole race in lane 4. Luckily, my team was very far in first, gratefully not affecting the race.

Q: Who would you consider your biggest competition over your four years?

A: Brienna Miller from Moss Point was the biggest competition up until she graduated last year in high jump. This year Mallory Streetman from Gulfport and Deja Howard from my own school were my biggest competitors in the high jump.

Q: What was your greatest accomplishment?

A: My greatest accomplishment was winning state in high jump three years in a row.

Q: If you could do it all over again what would you change about your running career in high school?

A: I would not stress as much as I did. Putting pressure on myself, made my mindset change. I was less confident while competing because I didn't want to let myself down or people counting on me.

Q: What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?

A: I had to overcome a knee injury that wasn't a big deal, but with doing high jump, triple jump, and 300 hurdles, it put a lot of stress on my knees. My junior year, I got injured while playing soccer, so it was hard for me to be at my best during track season.

Q: What will you miss the most?

A: I will miss the long bus rides with all of my teammates and the coaches I could not live without. I'll also miss watching Andrew Moffet and Xavian Paige battle it out in their events.

Q: What advice would you give to younger athletes?

A: Always push yourself to be the best you can be and never settle for good enough. Give yourself credit for how much you have accomplished before even stepping out on the track.

Q: What kind of an impact has your coach had on you and your team?

A: Coach Zach is one in a million. He has shown me as well as my teammates that if you really want something, no matter what life throws at you, you can make it happen. He is one of the strongest people I know; my teammates and I look up to him very much. He is a great role model for everyone even in the community. He has been through a lot, but always makes everyone laugh through those hard times.

Q: What are your college plans?

A: I have signed to run track at the University of South Alabama.

Q: Who would you like to say 'thank you' to?

A: I would like to say thank you to my parents for always believing in me and getting me the help I need. I would like to thank Coach Zach and Coach Hall for giving me the tools to become a successful athlete.Thank you to my sister for always listening to any of my problems and always supporting me.Last but not least I would like to thank my two other coaches, but they are more like older sisters I never had, Devin Griffith and Abbie Rea. You have made doing sports fun and have given me someone to look up to not only in sports but in life.

Q: Is there anything else you'd like to add?

A: I would like to say that track has taught me a lot about life. When I started in the 7th grade, I did not think that one sport and one group of kids could make that much of a difference in your life. The bond that I have made on the team and with the sport are like no other, so I encourage everyone to try something that they have never done even if they are scared because it can change your life for the better.

Q: Favorite Meal?

A: My favorite meal is pasta, I can eat it 24/7, 7 days a week.

Q: If you could be any animal what would you choose? and why?

A: If I could be any animal, I would be a kangaroo because they love to jump just like me. They also travel in groups ,and I definitely like to be social all of the time.

Q: Your favorite superhero?

A: Thor because he uses his abilities for good to defeat all of the bad figures.
