An interview with Brandon Bordelon

Brandon Bordelon, is a senior at Saint Stanislaus.He is a standout athlete on the track, on the basketball court, and on the football field.In Track & Field he has had quite the career - He holds the Stanislaus School Record for Long Jump at 22-1.5, is a member of the school record 4x1 and 4x2 teams and has won 2 State Titles - one in Long Jump and one in the 110Hurdles.I caught up with Brandon to ask him about his career as well as the Corona Virus interrupting his senior year.
DP:What is your name, what grade are you in, and what school do you go to?
BB:Brandon Bordelon, senior, Saint Stanislaus College
DP:What is your GPA and ACT score?
BB:My GPA is 3.86, and I have a 21 on the ACT.
DP:What are your events? What are your Personal Records in those events?
BB:Currently my events are the 110 hurdles, long jump, 4x2 and 4x1.But I have done triple jump, high jump, the 300M hurdles, and the open 200.
My 110 hurdles PR is 14.86, my long jump PR is 22ft 1.5in, our best relay time for the 4x2 was 130.55, for the 4x1 it was 43.38 - those were both school records.
DP:What is the next goal, time, or mark that you are trying to hit?
BB:I want to jump at least 23ft in long jump and in the 110H I would like to reach a time of sub 14.5.
DP:What is your favorite workout your Coach has you do?
BB:I don't really have a favorite workout. I just like to do my work and compete to the best of my ability.
DP:What is your least favorite workout?
BB:My least favorite workout is 400 repeats.
DP:What are your plans after high school?
BB:I would love to play basketball or run track in college.
DP:What motivates you to train?
BB:The thing that motivates me to train is to be the best and to compete against the best and win.
DP:Do you have any superstitions on meet day or perhaps an odd pre-meet routine?
BB:I don't have any superstitions but I do like to listen to music and just lock-in to what event I'm about to do. When I'm about to run or jump I don't really talk to people until after I compete because it helps me get focused.
DP:Gatorade or Powerade?
DP:Jersey (Singlet), tucked or untucked?
BB:Definitely untucked, I feel like I have more range of motion with it untucked. I do like wearing tighter jerseys because they don't catch as much wind when I'm running.
DP:Do you have a favorite meal for the night before a meet?
BB:I don't really have a favorite meal the night before, but I like eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on meet days.
DP:Do you take ice baths?If yes, what do you think about during an ice bath?
BB:I don't take ice baths.
DP:Name a lesson that track & field has taught you.
BB:A lesson that track has taught me is this...you may not always achieve your goal/time at first, but that doesn't mean you should give up.You should always strive to do your best no matter what the outcome is.
DP:Do you have a rival runner?Or who is your team's biggest rival?
BB:I don't particularly have a rival runner. I compete my hardest against anybody I'm running against. I would say our team's biggest rival is Pass Christian High School.
DP:What do you do to recover after a meet?
BB:I usually stretch before and after every event I compete in and at the end of the meet I stretch again and I usually try to stay off my legs as much as possible until practice the following day or practice on Monday. I have a stem machine that I use to help my legs recover also.
DP:What is your favorite thing about your coach?
BB:He trusts me when it comes to getting mentally prepared to compete and he believes in me to compete at the best of my abilities.
DP:Who is your biggest fan?
BB:My biggest fans would be my family and my track teammates.
DP:What advice would you like to share with younger runners, maybe the JH kids on your team?
BB:Advice that I would give to them is to always push themselves to the limit and to always compete hard and never get discouraged because to me in track you are competing against yourself because track is based on times and distances.
DP:Talk about your injury, I know it's been lingering.
BB:My injury has been a lingering problem and it has prevented me from competing in the beginning of the season but I have been resting and I have been working to get back to being 100% and competing at the level I know I can.
DP:What are your thoughts about the CoronaVirus?
BB:The coronavirus has been an unforeseen event that has sadly put a stop to my senior season of track and it is very upsetting but I have faith that it'll pass and hopefully we can compete for the ending of the season even if we have to go straight into district.
DP:What do you think about the possibility of your senior track season being cancelled because of the virus?
BB:It is very upsetting because I was relying on this year to really show what I can do and to really get the attention of college coaches and to be able to compete at the next level. I have still been working out and staying in shape, so if and when the season resumes I will be ready to run and jump.
DP:What is your greatest accomplishment in track & field?
BB:My greatest accomplishment in track and field are my two state championships. I have one in long jump and I have one in the 110H. I am hoping for the season to resume and I can win two more state championships in long jump and in the 110H.
DP:Is there anything else you want to share with the MileSplit Community?
BB:I love track and field. I wouldn't trade my experiences for anything and I have met many great people on the way.
