Behind the Athlete - Ephrem Amare

Callaway High School Cross Country, Hinds CC, MS

Most people know of Ephrem as the quiet, fast runner from Callaway High School.  What they may not know is his unique journey and the obstacles he overcame.

Growing up in the African country of Eritrea, Ephrem found a fondness for the sport of running through everyday activities.  From a young age, he would run everywhere: to local markets, other houses, and to and from his school which was three miles from his home.  For Ephrem, what started out as a burden turned into a pleasurable pastime.  As a native Eritrean, Ephrem looked to Zersenay Tadese, a national hero and world-record holder in the half marathon, as his inspiration.

At the age of 11, Ephrem crossed the border into Ethiopia without his family but with the dream of living in a county that doesn't have the instability and repressive policies of the Eritrean government.  Eritrea is known to have one of the world's worst human rights records, as they lack any freedom of press and freedom of political views. After spending five years in a United Nations refugee camp in Ethiopia, he immigrated to the U.S., knowing little English.  In just three years, Ephrem worked hard to succeed in athletics and academics.  He distinguished himself by learning English and completing all courses necessary to graduate from Callaway High School with his class.  That alone is no small accomplishment, but he did it while working a job and competing in cross country at the highest level.

Ephrem attributes an easy transition into running at Callaway High School to his relationship with former Callaway runner Sedrick Djano, who emigrated to the U.S. from the Congo several years before in similar circumstances to Ephrem's.  As a mentor and role model, Sedrick led Ephrem in training, taught him running discipline, and provided motivation along the way.  Even after graduating high school, Sedrick has continued to support Ephrem by writing workouts and providing guidance.

During his high school career, Ephrem worked to balance athletics, schoolwork, and work.  This rigorous schedule taught him how to work diligently and efficiently, all while maintaining a positive outlook.  Another mentor for him has been Price Chadwick, the head coach of St. Andrew's boys cross country team.  When asked about Ephrem's character, Coach Chadwick spoke of how "Ephrem always had a smile on his face, and always did what needed to be done."  Having a positive attitude is a crucial piece of Ephrem's success in difficult circumstances.

Having learned disciplined running habits facilitated Ephrem in putting together a successful final cross country season. The season yielded an astounding nine victories over 12 races, as well as a 5th place performance in a highly competitive 6A State Championship Meet. Boasting an impressive 16:15 personal record in the 5k, he looks to continue his momentum as he enters college. He will be attending Hinds Community College this coming year, and he hopes to compete during the track and field season.
