MacNeal Makes It Official She Will Be Running With The Rebels

Katherine MacNeal started running track in eighth grade. She had played soccer, softball, and volleyball, but wanted to try something new. She tried out for the track and cross country teams at Cypress Bay and fell in love with the sport. Now a senior, MacNeal says running helped her get through some personal times in her life as well.

"It helped me get through my mother's battle with breast cancer. She was diagnosed during my freshman year and it was my escape. She encouraged me though to stay positive. She is currently cancer free and doing really well."

MacNeal, who was the 1,600 meter runner-up this outdoor season , dedicated her senior cross country season to her mother. 2013 was a great year for the Cypress Bay star who finished in the top three in six out of her eight meets. MacNeal was the conference as well as district champion and the 4A runner-up where she ran a new personal best time of 18:28.00. As a result of her success, she received college interest from the University of Miami, South Alabama, UNF, FAU, and Ole Miss. She says her visit to Oxford, Mississippi after Pre-States sealed the deal.

"I immediately fell in love with the school. Right when I stepped on campus I knew it was the place for me. I felt like I could really excel in the positive atmosphere. Mississippi has a lot to offer and I felt like it was the perfect fit. I really liked the campus and all of the people I met at Ole Miss. I met Kacy Smith (Estero alumni) and the whole team on my visit. They were all so welcoming and I really enjoyed meeting all of the girls."

MacNeal credits her success to her mother, who she calls the strongest person she knows, and can't wait for what college has in store.

"She's taught me that I can do anything I set my mind to. She's my inspiration. Four years ago I would have never thought I would be running in college, but now I can't picture my life without running. I don't think I've reached my full potential yet and I'm looking forward to excellent coaching and helping the team in any way possible.. I'm so excited to run for Coach Dawson and Coach O'Neal!"
