An Interview with Lina May

by DP Daigle

Lina May is a junior at Vancleave High School.  She finished first overall in the girls' 4A State Meet last year as a sophomore.  May has also had success on the track last season where she earned a State Title in the 1600M and finished fourth in the 800M.  Lina looks to lead a talented Vancleave squad to a high finish at this year's State Meet.

DP:  What is your name, what grade are you in, and what school do you go to?

LM:  I'm Lina May, and I am a junior at Vancleave High School.

DP:  What is your GPA and ACT score?

LM:  I have a 3.4 GPA and my current ACT score is a 20.

DP:  What is your current Personal Record (Best Time) in the 5K?

LM:  19:15.

DP:  What is the next goal or time that you are trying to hit?

LM:  I want to break into the 18's!

DP:  What is your favorite workout your Coach has you do?

LM:  I love to run bleachers.

DP:  What is your least favorite workout?

LM:  Tempo runs.

DP:  What are your plans after high school?

LM:   I really hope to run in college.

DP:  Do you have any superstitions on race day or perhaps an odd pre-race routine?

LM:  I always wear my pink headband, and I listen to music before every race.

DP:  Gatorade or Powerade?

LM:  Gatorade.

DP:  Your Jersey aka singlet, tucked or untucked?

LM:  Tucked.

DP:  Do you have a favorite meal the night before a race?

LM:  Yes, and this might sound weird but salmon, black beans, and yellow rice.

DP:  Do you take ice baths?

LM:  No, I do not.

DP:  Name a lesson that running and training as a runner has taught you.

LM:  Running has taught me that I am capable of anything if I push myself.  Also, it has taught me not to let having asthma hold me back.

DP:  Do you have a rival runner?  Or who is your team's biggest rival?

LM:  Last year I loved running against Ramsey Wagner.  We always ran great times when we ran against each other.

DP:  What do you do to recover after a race?

LM:  Eat a lot and drink plenty of water.

DP:  What is your favorite thing about your coach?

LM:  My dad is my coach.  He is always pushing me through all my ups and downs.

DP:  What is the strangest thing you've seen during a race?

LM:  Last year I ran a race and there were scarecrows in the woods right near the course.  Probably because it was around Halloween.

DP:  Who are your biggest fans?

LM:  My parents and grandparents.

DP:  What advice would you like to share with younger runners, maybe the JH kids on your team?

LM:  Don't give up.  Even if you're not a top runner right now, if you push yourself and train hard you will get better and better.

DP:  Is there anything else you want to share with the MileSplit community?

LM:  I have had an account with MS MileSplit since I started racing in the 7th grade.  The calendar, rankings and race results have all been so helpful.  Thank you MileSplit!

DP:  Thank you, Lina May, for sharing your thoughts with us!
