Welcome back! It's your favorite coach on the coast and I'm here to give you the run around! Well, I'm really going to give you the run down on a sport where we mostly run around. This edition, I'd like to take a glimpse at the Track & Field Meet Schedule down here in the bottom six.
The season starts on March 3rd with the 9th Annual Bearcat Track & Field Classic at Long Beach High School. Coach Welch always puts on a good meet, and the field looks to consist of East Central, Bay High, Picayune, Pass Christian, Pascagoula, George County, St. Patrick, Gautier, West Harrison, Pearl River Central, and Hancock. Athletes will be striving to set good opening season marks here, and what better way to kick off the season than at the Bearcat Classic!
There are two big meets on tap for the first Saturday of the season, March 5th. Gulfport hosts their annual Prince Jones Relays in Gulfport while Saint Stanislaus will hold the 3rd Annual Catholic School Challenge.
The CSC will bring in a host of New Orleans Schools: Mt. Carmel, Ursuline Academy, Cabrini, Chapelle, and Dominican. The Rocks and Crescents from OLA are the host teams, and they are excited to welcome powerhouse McGill-Toolen Catholic from Mobile, Alabama and Archbishop Hannan from Covington, Louisiana. In two short years this meet has seen 11 national elite performances, and this year looks solid with perennial power house McGill-Toolen in the mix along with 4A contender SSC. The girls' side should be exciting too, with plenty of talent from across three states.
Gulfport is back at it again on Saturday, March 12th with the Gaston Hewes Invitational. The D'Iberville Relays and M &M relays will take place on Thursday, March 17th. The M&M Relays are hosted at Moss Point, and Gulfport, Vancleave, and Pascagoula will be in attendance with possibly George County, Biloxi, East Central, and Gautier.
The Pass High invitational on March 18th will include Bay High, Hancock, St. Martin, Biloxi Girls, Long Beach, Stone High, and possibly George County and Gautier. Look for Long Beach to start hitting their stride here while first year Coaches from Bay and Pass really start figuring out their rosters.
On Saturday, March 19th, West Harrison will host the West Harrison Invitational. The Hurricanes have a beautiful facility and always do a good job hosting Cross Country Meets, so we expect the same from them here for a mid-season meet.
The All State Relays on March 24th at Ocean Springs will include Biloxi, D'Iberville, Gautier, George County, Gulfport, Moss Point, Ocean Springs, Pascagoula, and East Central. It's another chance to shuffle the roster, or improve on times as Division Meets near. Look for Ocean Springs, and Gulfport to do well here, but don't count out the other big schools or the scrappy Moss Point.
The 21st running of the Rock-A-Chaw Relays will be held in Bay St. Louis on Saturday, April 2nd. This year's field consists of hosts SSC and OLA along with Mt. Carmel, Saint Patrick, Dominican, Bay High,
Pass Christian, and Chapelle. It will be a great time for SSC, Bay, and Pass to take a look at their Division competition.
Three good meets finish up the schedule going into Division Meets. On Thursday April 7th the Long Beach Invitational, Rebel Relays at George Country, and Sabatini Relays at Biloxi will all be run. It will serve as a final tune up going into the Division Meets, and one last look for coaches to figure out who their top 3 in each event will be.
The Sabatinni Relays will include Moss Point, Gautier, D'Iberville, Hancock, Ocean Springs, Petal, and Navarre High School from Florida.
