Who's The Boss? Suwannee Star Hopes To Finish Season With Second High Jump State Title

Rec sports, basketball, volleyball, weightlifting, track and field. Suwanee senior Logan Boss has let her competitive juices flow in all of the above. Of all, it was track and field that stood out the most.

Boss transferred from Branford High School to Suwannee High School at the end of her sophomore year. She says the decision was mainly academic, becuase of dual enrollment classes, but from an athletic standpoint the school competed at a much higher level.

"They competed with bigger schools and bigger meets, so that's more competition, which I believe is a very big part of getting better. The transition wasn't hard at all, I had both my prior coaches already at Suwannee, and I knew a couple people. Once I got there I adjusted pretty easy."

Suwanee High School is located in the town of Live Oak, near the start of Interstate 10 and about 80 minutes east of Tallahassee. As of 2011, the city had a population of just over 6,000 students.  One of those places where everyone knows everyone. Boss, the reigning 2A state champion in the high jump says it is hard to find meets in the area.

"We have to travel a lot to go to big meets, which aren't really even huge. We've traveled to Panama City, just for invitationals, and competition. I  feel like competition is important, and honestly this year so far, I haven't had any competition in high jump or the hurdles which makes it hard for me to make myself better. I need to be pushed, I would rather race hard every meet to win, than just beat my own time.

Boss has cleared 5-10 several times this year, most recently at the Santa Fe Raider Invitational. She'is undefeated in every event she has entered this season which also includes the 100 and 300 hurdles as well as the triple jump. She tries not to worry about the outside competition she will face down the road at regionals and states. Instead the standout prepares herself the best she can because she knows that they are working just as hard as she is.

The state meet is the ultimate destination. It's a place she is quite familiar with. As a freshman she was 8th in the 300 hurdles. As a sophommore she competed in the high jump, triple jump, and 100 meter hurdles. She was third in the high jump. Last year she went for those three events as well as the 300m hurdles and came home with a state title in the high jump. She says her outstanding leaping ability translates well into the respective events and hopefully more state titles.

"I fell like since they're both jumping related events they help with my explosion in my legs which helps all around. My goals for this year are definitely to beat last year's marks and times.  I really only have specific goals for the high jump which is to jump 6 feet by the end of the year. This has been a goal since I started jumping in 6th grade and now I'm actually close to obtaining it."

Boss is proving she is the boss when it comes to the top jumpers in the state. She is currently ranked number two behind Stacy Destin who recently cleared six feet. Nationally, she is tied for sixth. When told she was ranked she had no idea where she stood.

Wow, I honestly didn't know. Sixth in the state is an amazing achievement in its self, and tied for sixth  in the country is beyond amazing to me. I feel like many years of hard work are paying off, and now im just having fun doing something that I love to do."

When the season ends at the beginning of May, it will soon start a new chapter in the youngster's life. After taking visits to the University of Oregon, the University of Florida, and Mississippi State, she says it was the Bulldog's that won her heart, and help to fulfill a dream she had since she entered high school..

"I loved the way the atmosphere was at MSU, it was totally new, but comfortable cause it felt like home. It's a big D1 school in the SEC, but its not in a huge town and I like that. The campus, the athletes, and the coaches, everything about it just felt right to me when I was on my visit and to be offered a full ride was definitely a huge thing for me. Eventually I want to be an SEC champion and then onto becoming an NCAA champion. I hope to get a contract running to make it to an even bigger stage after college."

Off Track: Get To Know Logan Boss

What are some interesting things outside of track and field that people might not know about you?

I skipped a grade in middle school. My best friend is a four year old, and I have an obsession with lions. I also love to draw.

What the last movie you saw?

Endless Love.

Do you listen to music before meets?

Yes. My favorite  music pre-meet is definitely rap or music with good fast beats.

What is your pre-meet routine?

Usually I stretch excessively before I run/jump, just to relax.

If you were stranged on an island with three items what would they be?

I would definitely take green tea, my cat Bentley, and my phone even if it doesn't work, it still has music and pictures.

Are there any athletes in the sport you look up to?

I look up to Erica Bougard, she in a heptathlete for MSU and is the reigning NCAA outdoor heptathlon champion, and current SEC indoor pentathlon champion.

What is the best piece of advice you ever have ever received?

The best advice would probably be from one of the millions of talks with my coach, Coach Stebbins. Not only is he my coach, but we are super close, so he always tells me "you just gotta go, kid" and it makes me want to do my best, and just go as hard as I can.
